Indonesian pop-star 'Ariel' goes to prison over stolen sex tape
[HMG Celebrity News] – Sex tapes have brought several delusional people some undeserved fame, but those made by Indonesian pop-star Nazril ‘Ariel’ Irham have just brought him 3½ years in jail.
Back in June we told you how Ariel claimed the tapes he made with several famous girlfriends were stolen and never intended for public release. But Judge Singgih Budi Prakoso pointed out the star had done nothing to stop their distribution.
"As a public figure, the defendant should be aware fans might imitate his behavior,” OMG quotes the Judge as saying. He also noted that Ariel, who is the vocalist of Indonesia’s hit group ‘Peterpan,’ had shown no remorse.
The sentence was 3½ years – out of a possible 12 – and a $25,000 fine.
Outside the court, fans insisted the embarrassment Ariel had suffered was punishment enough;
"He’s just a victim,” said one tear-stained fan. “He didn’t post that video.”
But more than 500 people outraged by the case and Ariel’s sentence tried to storm the gates of the court, yelling “Too light! Too light.” They also pelted the armored police car which took him to jail with rotten eggs and tomatoes.
“More years for Ariel!” shouted Kurnia Maryati, a 33-year-old mother, dressed in an Islamic headscarf.
Indonesia has the highest Muslim population of any country on Earth and a radical fringe who follow that faith have taken advantage of the country’s vague and widely-despised anti-pornography law to persecute people they regard as adding to the nation’s ‘moral decline.’
This vocal minority have attacked everything from transvestites and bars, to those who practice non-Muslim religions which these self-appointed guardians had decided were “deviant.”
The videos were made public in June. Ariel’s girlfriend, who starred in one tape was with him in court and broke down in tears when her lover was sentenced. It’s not yet known if he plans to appeal.
But in a separate trial, the man who admitted uploading the videos to Facebook and YouTube was sentenced to just two years in jail.
