Whether you are the typical "sorority prototype" or a gal who likes to be a bit more independent, sorority rush can be a great opportunity for you!

I know that some people take issue with sorority life and the dues can be expensive; however, I am a firm believer that whether you plan to pledge or not, going through sorority recruitment is a smart choice for every freshman.  Not to mention, I'll be here blogging the whole way to walk you through it.

Why do I say rush is a must you might ask?  Well, in my opinion, rush is one of the easiest and fastest ways to meet other girls at the beginning of the school year.  Also you'll get to know your new campus, learn about other interesting activities to get involved with, AND what fashionista doesn't love an opportunity to flaunt her personal style?

Nobody wants to be the girl eating her lunch alone in the bathroom because she had no one to sit with in the dining hall.

That's why it’s so great that rush usually starts right before school when everyone is feeling a little lost and looking to find a group to latch onto. Traveling from house to house each day will quickly connect you with your fellow PNM's (Potential New Members), and since you will all be going through the same experiences you'll have plenty to talk about.  Also, you'll get to meet the older girls rushing you and the Gamma Chi's who will be guiding you through rush.  I'm still friends with a bunch of girls I met during recruitment, and I must say having them around the first few uncomfortable days made me feel a lot more at home in my strange new surroundings.

Additionally, you will basically get a personal tour of the campus walking to the different houses everyday complete with advice from older girls about fun places to go and fun things to do on the weekends.  This information can be vital for finding your way to class the first week and having fun things to do with all your new besties.

For those of you looking to get involved, an entire day of rush is dedicated to showing off each of the sororities' philanthropies and other activities they are involved in.  These philanthropies and on campus activities are often ones you can join with or without the sorority.

The best part: come bid day you are not even required to pledge! So why not mooch off all of the benefits?  Plus, who knows? By the end of the week you may have a change of heart.

Some things you will need if you plan to rush:

  • Resume, with a picture of yourself attached.
  • Recommendations: at least one letter of recommendation from a past member of each of the sororities you are interested in.  Ask your mom if she has any friends who were in sororities who could write a rec for you.  You can also ask your friends if their moms were in a sorority, or ask older girls if they know anyone who has graduated and might write one for you.  It may seem awkward and feel like you are being annoying, but most women know how necessary recs are and will love the chance to help you out.
  • Awesome Outfits- Rush is the prime time to flaunt what you've got.  If you are like me and enjoy getting dressed up and looking your best, you will love this week.  Look for unique, comfortable pieces that show off your personal style, but be careful not to take things too extreme.  Most girls like to wear sundresses or a cute skirt and shirt.  A fashionable romper can work too as long as it isn't too short.  I'll write more about what to wear each day of rush and post some examples in my next blog post, so be on the lookout!

Thoughts?

If you are interested in going through recruitment usually your school's website will have a link for Greek life with information about rush.  Look for my upcoming blog posts about rush. Also, either tweet me or email me at info@college-style.com with any questions.
