It’s that time of year again: the time to start thinking about what you’ll bring to college, how you’ll pack it, where you’ll put it and all the important questions: can I fit this in my car? If I manage to fit this in my car, will it fit through the door? While some students, such as my friend Brett, for example, who used to boast, “I came here in two suitcases!” will be able to pack light, for most people, a little more planning than stuffing your clothes into two suitcases the night before move-in day will be required to decorate your dorm room. For my next few posts, I am going to walk you through what you’ll need to decorate the most important areas of your dorm room: your bedroom, your office, your living room, your kitchen, your bathroom and your closet. Even if you dorm room will be less square footage than your closet at home, organizing your spaces into “rooms” is important to both help the space feel like home and to make sure you cram the maximum amount of stuff into your dorm room, an art I mastered out of necessity — I had major problems housing my hat, shoe, jewelry and clothing collections the first few weeks. My Dorm Room 2010-2011Photo Credit to Deck My Dorm, because, although this is my room, the Photoshop skills are theirs. Before we continue this post series, I think it’s important to note that we at College-Style do have connections to Deck My Dorm and Peace Love & Decorating. Although this post and all others mentioning DMD are not paid company endorsements, since the Deck My Dorm founders, Jana and Jennifer, also originally founded College-Style, we are close. Plus, one of them is my mother (Hi, Mom!). Everything in this post and all others on College-Style reflect the opinion of the author. Thought you should know and thanks for understanding! Anyways, back to my room. As you can see from the photo, each area of the room had its own purpose. The lofted bed serves as the bedroom, the futon area is the living room, under my bed is the office and the wardrobe functions as a closet (plus, the additionally space hidden by the curtain, which I had to share with my roommate by the way!). Although I didn’t have a kitchen or bathroom in my room, the shoe organizer acted as my “bathroom” and the kitchen stuff was housed in a bookcase to the left of the futon. For each post, I’ll be breaking down my room from last year and some of the awesome decor I’m planning for my apartment-style dorm next year with a full bed, my own closet and my own bedroom (gasp!). Also, read the posts we have already written about dorm decorating for tips on hanging wall decor, tips for changing sheets on a loft bed and making over your dorm wardrobe. Thoughts?Hope you guys enjoy and let me know if you need any help decorating your dorm. Email at info@college-style.com or tweet us @collegestyle12. |
| What to Bring to Freshman Orientation Posted: 27 Jun 2011 04:17 PM PDT By: Madison of Samford University. Follow me @freckshairbows. One of the things I was most worried about when I was preparing for my Samford University orientation was what to wear! I wanted to make sure my clothing fit the occasion. Luckily, I knew a few girls who already attended the earlier orientation sessions and asked them on Facebook what girls had been wearing. They suggested sundress, cute tops and shorts. It is a good idea to talk to girls who have already been through this experience at your school if possible to get a clear idea of what other people have been wearing. What to Wear
Packing for my trip was pretty easy because the school provided a list of items to bring. Don’t forget to reference to this list when you get ready to leave for orientation. Linens and other items such as shampoo and conditioner will be needed if you are staying in the dorms. What to Pack
The most important thing you need to keep in mind is HAVE FUN! It can be a stressful time, especially with registering for classes, but there are so many amazing people you get to meet. Branch out and introduce yourself! Thoughts? What was your experience at orientation like? If you still need to go to college orientation, make sure to read this post for the truth about orientation. |
