Posted: 11 Jun 2011 12:56 AM PDT Starring Sahil Mehta, Mannat Ravi Directed by Sunny Bhambani Rating: 2/5 God and Subhash Ghai know, the film industry needs new talent. It is therefore heartening to see Ghai patronize newcomers. Love Express is a sadly uninspired vehicle to accommodatenew talent. Everyone connected with this rather touchingly disoriented low-budget romantic comedy set in 'speeding' train (or so we are supposed to believe) is untried, eager to make an impression . The amateurishness of presentation is in some ways, a sign of burgeoning talent. The students of Subhash Ghai's acting school seem in search of their bearings. And that's what makes them so endearing. The set representing the chugging express train is quickly filled up with a wedding party, assorted uncles and auntiess, nieces and nephews oddball characters who burst in pop-Bhangra songs as though they auditioning for India's Most Flaunted. The characters revel in their loud quirkiness because that's the way a Punjabi wedding entourage is expected to behave. Subtlety, or whatever we may call any attempt to infuse an aesthetic restraint to a film about wedding revelry, is at a low premium here. The debutant director has a grip over his characters but not much of an idea as to how to package them in any way that appears innovative. The two newcomers playing the reluctant bride and groom struggle with lines that try hard to replicate the trendy cynicism of today's wannabe-cool brigade. The small-town social climbers with their fake designer bags and borrowed accents were far more palpably credible in Aanand Kumar's Tanu Weds Manu . Love Express expresses neither a love for the small-town milieu that it tries to pack into a train of caricatural characters, nor does display any fluidity in its narration. The actors possess no wherewithal to make the loud caricatural characters spoofy in their flamboyance. At the most we can smile indulgently at the new talent that Subhash Ghai's film school throws forward. Decades ago Ghai acted in a film Umang about youthful aspirations. Love Express makes you wonder what these young guns really want. |
Posted: 11 Jun 2011 12:54 AM PDT Cast: Om Puri, Linda Bassett, Ila Arun, Jimi Mistry and Aqib Khan Director: Andy DeEmmony Rating: 3.5 /5 Twelve years have passed since "East Is East", the cult film on the blithe angst of the Asian diaspora in England, was made. In the sequel, which, let me quickly add, is a decent engaging and warm follow-up to the original film, the time-passage is condensed into a far more manageable time frame. The captivating device whereby we suspend our disbelief about the characters' ageing process and look at them 12 years hence as though just four years have passed, works gloriously to the narrative's advantage. So here we have the insufferably boorish, selfish and intolerant Pakistani-Britisher Jahangir alias George Khan (Om Puri). For those who came in late, George, who is married to an English woman, has sent his eldest son to get culturally accustomed in Pakistan. Now it's the younger son Sajid's (Aqib Khan) turn. The younger Khan boy Sajid's incredulity, bafflement, disgust, disbelief and slow acceptance of life in rural Pakistan -- the film was actually shot in rural Punjab in India -- comes across in scintillating spurts of cultural humour. Admittedly Aqib as the young British-Pakistani boy Sajid brings oodles of unhampered naturalness into the picture. There's no playing-for-effect here. Aqib plays Sajid as any culturally-challenged boy brought up in the West now faced with acres of unploughed Pakistani land and the ungainly sight of his eager-to-belong potbellied father trying to show skills with the bull. It's a terrific occasion for humour on the malady of cultural displacement. Director Andy deEmmony milks most of the situations in Ayub-Khan Din's clever script for all that they are worth. Many situations, such as that quietly explosive 'dialogue' between George's British and Pakistani wives where neither seems to understand each other's language and yet knows what the other is saying, are so empathetic and expressive in their undercurrents that you forgive the excessive zeal shown by the art- director in creating the bazaar-like bustle of the large joint family. Often you feel the production design and the characters border on the touristic. The accents range from the strange (Vijay Raaz) to the strained (Om Puri). The actors playing Sajid's rustic chum and the village seer seem straight out of Rudyard Kipling's imagination. What redeems the awkward slices of storytelling is the overall warmth and sincerity of presentation. Agreed some false notes are stuck. But the final tune of life strung in vibrant verses singing about a man trapped between two incompatible worlds rings true and melodic. The dilemma of a man caught between two worlds, cultures and wives is caught in an arresting arc across the characters. The performances are uniformly compelling. Om Puri takes up the role that he left behind 12 years ago without missing a beat. The Pakistani-British accent could have been a little less pronounced. But Puri plays the bigoted cultural anomaly with relish. His two screen wives Angela Bassett and Ila Arun confer a comforting credibility to the goings-on. Ila has some brilliantly-written scenes which she digs into with carnivorous passion. But it's young Aqib Khan as the free spirited, rebellious but good-hearted British boy discovering the joys of rural Pakistan in the company of a local boy, who could do with lessons on how to avoid imbibing bravura from cheap Pakistani films, is the prized discovery of the show. Some of the locational details are tenuous - Why is the Bollywood hit 'Piya tu ab to aaja' from 1971 playing on the soundtrack of Pakistan in 1975? Why do the locals speak in English? And why does the village seer behave like Saeed Jaffrey in recession? The overall sincerity of the storytelling doesn't allow us to dwell on trivial incongruities. "West Is West" provides an endearing slice-of-life entertainment even if you haven't seen the other film. |
Posted: 11 Jun 2011 12:51 AM PDT Cast: Salman Khan, Asin, Paresh Rawal Directed by: Anees Bazmi Rating: 3/5 She's a runaway bride. He's a runaway rogue, a little rough around the edges but a good hearted lovable soul. Salman Khan can play this character over and over again with his eyes closed. In "Ready" he is back to playing the lover-boy clown. "Mr. Fix-it" and "Ms Hum Apke Hain Conwoman" flirt and get naughty in exotic locations. They don't generate chemistry. They are just being around. Jeez, these two never tire of saying cheese! And when the going gets cheesy there's always the family to fall back on. There are three families, living in homes that appear to have been built to accommodate over-sized families. The setting is almost laughably anachronistic. Salman Khan and his director Anees Bazmi pay a hefty comic homage to "Hum Aapke Hain Koun". The Salman-Asin romance unfolds against the backdrop of a commodious joint family where every family-member seems determined to have a good time even at the expense of good taste. True, Asin lacks the gamine charm of Madhuri Dixit. But then the Salman Khan in "Ready" is not quite the Salman Khan from "Hum Aaapke Hain Koun". He hasn't aged. He's just become more smug and self-confident. Many times we catch him looking bored on camera. But that is this iconic star's style statement. When you are Salman Khan you can slip out of a character when you want. No one is complaining. Bazmi's script, a shoot off of a Telugu hit, accommodates more characters than Goa during the tourist season. Every character is over-dressed and over-the-top. Then men are constantly looking for reasons to say goofy corny things to one another. That's the required mood of this "panga-'mirth'-lena" comedy with an attitude that stretches from one end of the lengthy narration to the other with hardly a break for the plot to gather together its thoughts. Bazmi keeps the proceedings neatly on the side of good taste. Innuendos are avoided, and partly so because Salman has an image of the good-bad boy. He never offends refined sensibilities with his wildly bratty antics, though he never shows any inclination to be one of those refined types himself. He is happy being human in a way only Salman Khan can be. He gets able support from some solid performers like Akhilendra Mishra, Sharad Saxena, Manoj Pahwa, television comedian Sudesh Lehri and Mahesh Manjrekar whose hilarious act as Salman's dad is lifted from Sanjay Chhel's "Khubsoorat". Strangely the women performers are all vapid to the point of seeming sedated. This is a men's comedy with women welcome to join the fun. But nobody minds. And not because this is a mindless comedy. The quality of the gags is often higher than what we usually get in Bollywood comedies. But the film suffers from an overloaded narration. There is too much effort to cram in "entertainment" at every possible level. There is also a rather lame attempt to define the status of women in feudal households. But the attempt is so hurried and cursory, it's almost farcical. Replete with tongue-in-cheek references to many earlier blockbusters including Sooraj Barjatya's "Hum Aapke Hain Koun", "Ready" is like one of those familiar tunes sung to a new set of lyrics that you may not approve of but you empathize with because it offers the comfort of the familiar. Having said that, the film, it must be confessed, doesn't really offer even diehard Salman fans the fun-quotient expected from the mega-star. Too many people colonise this domestic comedy. Boisterous uncles, over-dressed aunties, under-intellectualised gangsters and irksome henchmen are all greedy to be noticed. The trouble is, they aren't doing anything that is terribly exciting or engaging, except playing the foil to the star of the show. And we all know who that is. |
News : All visitors, guests banned from the sets of Ash’s Heroine Posted: 11 Jun 2011 12:42 AM PDT In order to protect the script of his upcoming film Heroine, director Madhur Bhandarkar has banned all visitors from the sets of the Aishwarya Rai starrer which goes on floors today. In the film, Aishwarya reportedly plays a superstar actress whose career is on the decline, and she is terrified of fading into obscurity. The film draws references from the lives of many actors According to a trusted source, "It is quite an intense contemporary film. Knowing Madhur and his take on realistic films, he will be making characters, which are definitely inspired from real life. There are rumours already that most of the characters are based from various people within the film industry. To keep everything under check and to see to it that no one gets offended with information leaking out from the sets, the producers and Madhur have not only signed a non disclosure contract with everyone but they have also banned mobile phones from the sets." "Not only this, no guests will be entertained on the sets and there will be as many as 15 to 17 security guards stationed on the sets. The media and visitors are a strict no no on the sets," added the source. Having last faced the camera for Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Guzaarish, with co-star Hrithik Roshan, in September 2010, Aishwarya is back on a film set after nine months |

They claim that the advertisement has put them in a bad light. In the ad, Genelia was shown getting cozy with a pilot in a cockpit. "It's not funny to show that we don't take our jobs seriously. That too, a job with so many lives at risk," says a 27 year old pilot with Jet Airways, lashing out against the ad. "The ad agencies should not ruin our reputation. People use such ads to spread gossip about us," said an airhostess with Go Air. "Being glamorous is important in our profession, but people think we are easy because of such media portrayal," added another airhostess with Jet Lite. Hot : Shahid, Priyanka unknown to each other Posted: 11 Jun 2011 12:22 AM PDT Post break-up, Shahid Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra has again come together for Kunal Kohli's next. Though on-screen light still sparks between them,off-screen the couple behave like strangers. They even refused to rehearse together. When the director signed the two, love was at the peak but who knows before the film comes into floor, love would disappear. "The relationship is over. And though Kunal Kohli had full faith in Shahid and Priyanka's professionalism, he was wondering what the aftermath of the break up would be for his film. He needn't have worried. The pair is absolutely professional on camera. It is off-camera that the aloofness between the two becomes easily discernible," a source told. Despite, break-up the actors give their best on-camera but as soon as the light switched off, they behave like strangers. Their conversation on the set was very minimal. "The interaction between them is minimal, almost nil. Once they give their shots, they are strangers to one another. Considering the film has essentially two characters- Shahid and Priyanka- running through a gamut of emotions and spectrum of characters, the effort required to share a mutual passion on screen is a task," added the source. "The passion onscreen seems to almost mock the lack of feeling between the two off camera," informed the source. Hope, despite split-up they can pull the audience with their on-screen chemistry. |

Hot : Kangna Ranaut imitates Jaya Bachchan’s retro widow look Posted: 11 Jun 2011 12:10 AM PDT Indra Kumar's next will bring back the retro Bollywood widow. Yes! Double Dhamaal will have Kangna Ranaut play a character inspired by Jaya Bachchan's role in Sholay. Says a source from sets, "The quintessential widow form Sholay is back with Kangana in DD. Inspired by Sholay's iconic vidhwaah (widow), played by Jaya Bachchan, the director has styled KR in a similar look for one of the scenes in the film. Instead of wearing normal clothes required for the scene, the director told the stylists to give Kangana an old white saree, just like the ones widows in old films wore." Indra Kumar confirms, "It is a spoof a funny scene all in good humor. We are not making fun of or passing derogatory remarks on Jayaji and Sholay. It's just that in earlier times all widows were stereotyped. They wore white sarees and would only cook gajar ka halwa and alu parathas for their mothers. The particular scene, with all the other actors, is a spoof where she is in a widow's garb with minimal make-up. In the film, she plays a modern, smart and sexy young secretary to Sanjay Dutt." |

He forgot that he is a public figure and he cannot continue doing what he did back in college. So the media reported about every date that he we went for. This is a lesson for him to be more discreet rather than getting upset that it is being reported." His best friend Imran Khan defended Ranbir saying, "not so clean" image. Imran had said, "If he enjoys life, wine, women... there`s nothing bad about it. Ranbir`s not doing anything illegal, but if media wants to write about it, you can`t stop them." |
