Rush: What to Wear, What to Wear?

For most colleges, sorority recruitment lasts five days not including bid day.  As I've said before, rush is the ultimate opportunity to flaunt your personal style, and while you want to stand out, you also don't want to be completely off the mark. So I thought I'd give a few examples and ideas about what to wear for the different days of rush.

Round One usually lasts two days depending on the number of sororities on your campus. Sororities host an open house and PNMs travel to every house during these two days. Most girls wear sundresses or a cute skirt and top.

A sundress I plan to wear during rush that I got from a cute local boutique.

However, if you want to do something a little more chic, a dressy romper could be just the thing.  Make sure it isn't too short though!

My favorite Michael Kors romper. I got it super cheap at Nordstrom Rack.

Remember this week is all about impressing girls, so if your outfits are super trendy man repellers don't be afraid.  Also, a word of advice: DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT attempt to wear heels on these first two days.  The sorority girls know how much walking you will be doing and they will not judge you for not attempting to pull off some wedges, in fact, they'll probably think you're a little crazy if you do.  Your feet will KILL at the end of the day even in sandals! You will either be walking from house to house, waiting to go into the house, or standing in the houses being rushed by girls.  Hardly any sitting will be involved, so my advice would be some cute flat sandals.

Sam Edelman’s AKA my obsession.

Round Two is house tours.  PNMs will go to the houses to which they are called back and be shown around.  Often times, panhellenic creates a t-shirts for the PNM's to wear this day.  Pair your shirt with your favorite pair of shorts and once again, some flat sandals.

Round Three is skit round.  In this round, the PNMs return to the houses that they are called back to and watch a skit put on by each sorority and learn about the sororities' philanthropies.  The outfits for skit round are similar to round one.  A good thing to think about is that you will probably be with a smaller group of girls in this round and will talk to the sorority girls for a longer time. This makes Round Three the prime time to show off your favorite outfit.  For those of you itching to break out your wedges, this is the first round I would say it’s OK to wear them since you will be sitting more, but make sure that they are a comfortable pair!  Literally nothing is worse than walking around all day with blisters when taking off your shoes isn't an option, and a weird limp won't impress anyone.

Round Four is called Preference Round.  At Prefs you will go to your top three sororities that call you back.  There you will sit and eat and listen to them talk about their sorority, tell stories about the friends they have made and perhaps listen to a song or two.  All the sorority girls will be wearing black dresses and most PNM's decide to wear black as well.  Most dark colors are appropriate and patterns are okay too, but you will stand out like a sore thumb in anything bright.  Since you will only be going to three houses and this is the final day of rush go ahead and wear those heels you've been saving.  Try and find a black dress somewhere in between a sundress and semi formal, and since everyone will be searching through the racks at Bloomindales and Neimans try and find something different at your favorite local boutique or maybe during a summer vaca to the beach.

Bid Day!!! Bid day is the day you find out what sorority you'll be in.  After getting your bid card you and your new pledge class will meet up with your sorority (often at the sorority house if you have one) and have a big party!  Bid day is easy to dress for.  All the pledges wear a white sundress and feel free to wear heels if you want.  Often times girls change out of their dresses if they are going out after, so pack another outfit and something to sleep in!!

Bid Day!

Quick thought on purses for the week: I’m personally a huge fan of the ease and style of the cross-body bag, and since you are constantly going to be carrying your purse around during rush, I’d say that they are the way to go.  However, if you feel that the strap cutting across ruins your outfit and are comfortable carrying a bigger bag around go for it!

Thoughts?

I hope that this will be helpful to all of you thinking about going through recruitment. Let me know your thoughts and questions!!

This blogging thing…it’s been around a while now, and many are realizing what a rewarding endeavor it is, on a sartorial and psychological level. One thing I love about blogging is the opportunity to ask a question, ponder a theory—and have others share their thoughts and opinions as well. In this week’s roundup, several bloggers reflect on the positive influence blogging has had on their lives and self-esteem. (Superb! Yay for blogging!) Others ruminated on everything from whether style is really subjective, to whether fashion as an exhibit is a trend. Or not.

Stumped for post ideas? Want more engagement with your readers? Been contemplating the style-related proclivities of society? Ask, lovelies. Everyone has an opinion, and most are chomping at the bit to share. But the most wonderful aspect of this kind of engagement is not more comments. Those are nice, yes. It’s through discussion that personalities are revealed and relationships are forged. Your readers aren’t just a little avatar and some words. They are vibrant individuals—and your biggest fans!
