| The Good, the Bad and the Ugly Posted: 15 Jul 2011 06:00 AM PDT By: AJ of University of Georgia. Follow me @arrrcher. From Milan to Paris, various designers have been showcasing their looks on the runways for the past two weeks, allowing the fashion elite to see what is going to be “in.” For the most part, the outfits are inventive, wearable and fashion-forward. There are, however, the odd pieces here and there that make some people stop and wonder exactly what happened. As I looked through some of the pieces featured on GQ Style — a site I frequent more than is necessary — I noticed that the looks can be grouped into three distinct categories: the good, the bad and the ugly. The GoodThis look, created by Band of Outsiders for spring 2011, is simple, yet loud. Oftentimes when people try to achieve a look that stands out, they end up creating something that is just too obtrusive to be worn in public. The mustard yellow jacket stands out from the neutral shirt and shorts, which really keep the look calm and let the jacket do all the work. The splashes of coordinating — albeit unconventional — colors that show in the belt and shoes further add to the cool, urban feel the look gives off. The look stands out silently and is easily one of my favorites — but that may just be because I'm a sucker for slickers. The BadThis look was the product of Dirk Bikkembergs, and I literally had to furrow my eyebrows at it. His collection had swimsuits, bathrobes, moto jackets and suits, so I can't exactly say that I knew what he was going for in the first place. I can only assume he wanted to chronicle the day in the life of a man who started his day off with a swim, then came home on his motorcycle to get ready for a night on the town. Regardless of his goal, this look blurs the lines between the swimsuit and bathrobe portions of the show. From the waist up he looks as if he just emerged from the deep, but from the waist down I just see an after-shower towel wrap. I will agree that being fashionable on the beach or by the pool is always a plus, but after-shower fashion just seems a bit much for me. The UglyLet's all take moment here to stop and say: "What?" Bottega Veneta delivered this look for spring 2012. It is potentially inspired by the chain mail worn armor invented by Celtic warriors. The pattern of the shirt is very busy and distracting to the eye. The outfit has no solid lines that lead my eye in any kind of direction, so I'm stuck looking all over in confusion. In addition, I don't particularly like the shape or contrasting coppery-rose color of the neckline — I prefer necklines that form a "V" instead of a trapezoid. I must say the pants are very fashion-forward and I may have liked them with a different shirt, but in this outfit they reminded me too much of acid-washed rainbow jeans. Basically I feel as if each component of the outfit clashed with every other component and the look was poorly constructed.
