Most fashion lovers have noticed the high-waisted shorts trend building over the past few years. I must admit that at first I was hesitant to try this new popular look, but ever since I came to college, high-waisted shorts have become a staple in my wardrobe. At first, I mostly wore black high-waisted shorts with some pumps and a blouse tucked-in for a put-together look on a night out, but this summer has presented a more casual retro look that I adore. Some of the biggest trends of the summer are lace shirts and crop tops. Pair these with some high-waisted jean shorts and you'll have a hip, laidback and breezy look. Crop Tops and High-Waisted Shorts Not to mention, by pairing your crop top with some high-waisteds you'll prevent the awkward stomach predicament that a crop top creates for everyone who doesn't have the body of a Victoria's Secret model. And come on, we're in college now, who has time to go to the gym every day?! But even if you have somehow managed to keep up washboard abs, in my opinion it's still hard to pull off a crop top and low-rise shorts without looking like some over eager preteen at her first Justin Beiber concert. That's why I'm all about the high-waisted shorts. They add the needed dash of maturity and sophistication that makes the fun, sexiness of the crop top appropriate for the college-aged fashionista. To wear this look, pair your crop top and high-waisted shorts with a fedora and your favorite pair of gladiator sandals for a casual daytime look, or add some wedges or flatforms to dress it up! For a girl on a budget:Crop Tops: These are the easiest things to make. Cut off your favorite baggy graphic tee or tank just above the top of your shorts. Another style, which is one of my favorites, is cutting up the bottom of a shirt into long strands like in the pictures below. Make the top of the cuts a little above the top of your shorts, or cut a little higher if you are feeling daring.  High-Waisted Jean Shorts: A good cheap place to buy these is Forever 21 or Urban Outfitters. If you’re looking for something a little more unique and cheap go to your local thrift store and scout out an old pair of high-waisted mom jeans to cut off.
