| An Interview with a Recruitment Chair: The Inside of Rush Posted: 26 Jul 2011 10:50 AM PDT By: Piper of University of Georgia. Follow me @PiperEDavis. In the world of greek life, the task of organizing, preparing the sorority, and going through the recommendations and resumes of PNMs during recruitment falls into the hands of the sorority's recruitment chairs. They are in charge of teaching the sorority how to talk to and recruit PNMs, plan the activities of the sorority during recruitment, and often times they have a large amount of say about what the sorority is looking for when it comes to the formation of their newest pledge class. So I thought I would continue on my track of providing some inside information for you readers by interviewing a recruitment chair for one of the sororities on the UGA campus. Hailey Bryant is a rising junior at the University of Georgia and a recruitment chair for a sorority. She agreed to answer a few questions for me: Hailey Bryant
Q: What is your best advice for PNMs going through sorority recruitment? A: Just be yourself! Try not to be nervous and just let your true personality shine through. I feel like PNMs are under the impression that they have to act a certain way or say certain things, when in reality that's not the case at all. The goal for each PNM should be to find a sorority that's the best fit for who they really are.
Q: What are some do's and don't's for PNMs during recruitment? A: DO: Relax and have fun! DON'T: Try to be anyone you aren't.
Q: What are sororities looking for during recruitment? A: I think I speak for all recruitment chairs when I say that sororities are looking for members who will add a lot to our sorority, yet still feel at home. We want girls who are going to be proud to represent our sorority around campus.
Q: What's a funny story or awkward experience from your freshman year recruitment? A: When I was a PNM, I was at a sorority and the girl I was talking to asked me, “If you could be any kind of utensil, which one would you be?" I definitely hadn't prepared to answer that question!
Q: What's your favorite part of being a Recruitment Chair? A: My favorite part of being a recruitment chair is getting to meet all of the PNMs during recruitment. I have been working since January in preparation for recruitment so I can't wait to finally see all of the PNMs! I'm excited to see which girls are in our new pledge class and I'm excited to see all of our hard work pay off. Thoughts? Do you have any funny stories from your experience from rush? Do you have any questions about recruitment and what sororities are looking for? Feel free to ask questions and share comments! |
