I've been trying to find that perfect balance between an appropriate, professional work wardrobe and a function outfit in this heat. Here's a few options that I feel strike that balance. Enjoy! In the summertime, I like to wear clothes that breath and do not stifle or suffocate. Unfortunately, my shorts, haltars, and bathing suit covers are not deemed "office appropriate" by the employee handbook. The good news is that even your boss gets hot, and company dress code normally becomes more casual and relaxed in the work environment. However, you should still be mindful of your personal professional persona. My personal favorite option is to wear a sundress; breathable and comfortable, you can dress it up with heels and down with sandals. By adding a cardigan or scarf, you're able to stay comfortable when the A/C is blasting and add a statement to your dress. Here are a few that I think are perfect: Like this look? Get it here Not too short, loose, yet sophisticated. The sleeves and neckline keep the look modest without being too stuffy; and the bright color adds a bit of summer flare.
Again, this dress isn't separated too far from the knee, and the combination with the blazer makes the outfit decidedly "business" and less "picnic". The neutral color palette makes this option more appropriate for serious work environments, but the pattern adds enough style and personality to stand out. Summer boots will add a punk-rock vibe to this otherwise tame outfit.
I love love love summer white. The gathering at the top gives this look a fresh take on that 1960's-style conservative dress. I'd pair this with an orange bag and nude or grey heels and top it off with a navy cardigan. (Whatever, Auburn. We’ll see what happens next year!)
Still white, but I like these pants for the fit, not the color. Relaxed, wide-leg trousers allow your legs the same comfort and freedom as a skirt, but is more modest and dressed up. Pairing skirts and blouses is another way to balance comfort and professionalism. Maxi skirts are really popular right now, but they're a little fussy for me. I prefer skirts that are right above or at the knee, combined with a sleeveless blouse and cardigan (can you tell I'm a cardigan person?). Pencil skirts are also fabulous and classic. Can't go wrong when paired with a classic pair of pumps and oxford shirt. Don’t you wish you were wearing this? This look is perfect. I love the pop of yellow to jazz up an otherwise classic black and white skirt. I can be funky-cool! You can be the judge on whether this would be a viable option for your work wardrobe. I love it because the print is unique, but the skirt maintains clean lines and therefore doesn't go too far. It looks like it might be a little short, so I would balance it with a top with sleeves.
I love love love this skirt. The high waist and pleats make it so now, but its not too trendy. The skirt also has pockets (what did we do before skirts and dresses had pockets?!?). I just think this is a fun piece to have that crosses between workplace and weekend attire without seeming out of place at either. Skirts, dresses, and trousers are a go. I think shorts should be avoided because they just seem a little too relaxed for the office. These days, however, professional dress codes have relaxed, so you can gauge what is and is not appropriate by what your superiors are wearing. What's your favorite workplace wardrobe item you can't live without? |
