Editor’s note: This is the seventh post in a series about decorating your dorm room in specific spaces. Read the introduction here, the bedroom post here, the office post here, the living room post here, the closet post here, and the bathroom post here.

Even if you don’t have a full kitchen and you have access to food at the dining hall, you’ll still need a kitchen area for when the dining halls are closed or you’re too lazy to walk all the way there (it happens). To organize my kitchen area, I used the bottom shelf of a bookcase and some storage cubes. You can choose your storage situation based on how much food you plan on bringing.

What You’ll Need….

  • Storage: Like I said above, you’ll need some sort of organizational apparatus for your food. Try storage cubes, storage bins, a book case or traditional cabinets.
  • Small fridge: Fridges help store your food, whether you bought it or you “rescued” it from the dining hall. You may want to keep some sodas in there so you can get your caffeine fix during all-nighters.
  • Appliances: Check with housing to see what will be available in the building. Most dorms have a small kitchen down the hall with a microwave, so you won’t need one. You may want to bring a coffee maker if you drink coffee. If you’re short on cash and can’t afford a one cup coffee maker, Target sells cute little pot ones that are very affordable. I also brought a toaster because my dorm kitchen didn’t have one. During dinner, I would take a bagel from the dining hall and toast it the next morning in my toaster.
  • Kitchenware: This largely depends on your kitchen situation. You may want dishes, silverware, mugs and a snack bowl or you may just want to go with disposable if you won’t be using silverware much. You’ll need tupperware for food you may want to take out of the dining halls. Check your school’s policy on this first. Some schools only let you take certain items. Ask an upperclassman how strict your dining hall is on this. Also bring a water bottle and a termos for coffee.
  • Paper towels: Go ahead and bring some paper towels. They are useful for many, many things.
  • Water pitcher: Depending on the size of your fridge, you may want to bring a water pitcher with a built-in distiller so you can clean water from the school drinking foundation and keep it in your dorm. Some water bottles have built-in distillers as well if you are going to be refilling on the go.
  • Chip Clips: At some point in your college career, you’ll probably eat a whole bag of chips in one sitting. Most of the time, this (hopefully) won’t be the case, so bring some chip clips to keep your chips yummy in between snackings.
  • Dish liquid: You’ll need to clean your kitchenware if you have it and your water bottle. You may also want to bring a sponge.

Thoughts?

Now that you see everything you’ll need for your dorm room, did I leave anything out? Send pictures of your room to info@college-style.com to be featured on the site.
