Chillar Party : Movie Review

At one point in American history, dogs and blacks were not allowed in public places. During the British occupation of China, it was 'dogs and Chinese' while at the first Mumbai marathon the rule was against dogs and wheelchairs. A dog has thus become a metaphor for seclusion, for denying someone their fundamental rights.

"Chillar Party" uses this metaphor in a brilliant, but hilariously entertainment manner to make a statement against those who seclude, be it Shiv Sena in Mumbai, fanatic Hindus who want Muslims out of India, or upper class Hindus who refuse lower caste people basic rights etc. That it does so while making you laugh, is its greatest strength.

After a street kid Phatka (Irrfan Khan) and his stray dog Bhidu begin cleaning cars in a rich locality, the rich, school going kids first try to fend him off, but later become great buddies.

When a minister offended by the dog passes a law to ban all street dogs from Mumbai, the kids resort to some unconventional activism to save their beloved dog. But is it even possible for the powerless kids to take on a high and mighty minister?

"Chillar Party", in essence, is a children's film. But those who can read between the lines and see between pictures know that the most brilliant, imaginative and metaphorical literature and cinema in the world, are for kids.

Thus in literature you have your 'The Prince' and 'Gulliver's Travels', while the films of Iranian auteurs, though simple and innocent, attack an unjust system. "Chillar Party" is a welcome addition to these greats of world cinema.

Yet, what does a children's film need to be good? A simple story, good metaphor, oodles of cuteness and innocence, fun and humour and a band of actors to carry it all off. If you have these, any other drawbacks can be excused. "Chillar Party" has these and much more.

The film is filled with observations and idiosyncrasies that will leave you laughing your guts out. Every child in the film has acted with such restrained understatement that they give your popular stars a run for their money. And yet, beyond all these beautifully working elements, it is the metaphor of the dog that takes the cake.

Unlike nature, the world of humans is full of seclusion. Thus a Bal Thackeray in the 1960s wants the South Indians, in the 1990s the Muslims, and now the North Indians out of Mumbai. Fanatic Hindus want Muslims out of India.

The Americans wanted blacks out of America. The Australians want Indians out. The Sri Lankans want the Tamils out. The list is literally endless. But as the film so valiantly, sincerely and emotionally argues, what is needed is inclusion.

"Chillar Party is filled with allegorical moments that hint at how the poor, the disenfranchised, the adivasi, the handicapped, the minority survive.

When the rich kids take away his cleaning cloth, Phatka has no qualms about washing cars with his only tshirt. The rich consider poor to be pests and want them out, but the poor strive and ironically serve the same rich. Some, pushed to the edge, take up arms against mighty odds, like in the tribal belts of India.

Besides saluting the creative genius of writer-director Vikas Bahl and Nitesh Tiwari, one has to bow to UTV and Salman Khan, for flexing their muscles for something so beautiful.

"Chiller Party" may be a small film. But as cinema goes, in its adroitness, it is much more mature than 99 percent of the films ever made in India. And that, you'll reckon, is no 'small' achievement.

News : Salman Khan gifts Raj Babbar a Merc

Salman Khan has been in a generous mood lately. On Monday night, he gifted his Bodyguard co-star Raj Babbar a Merc!

It was a belated birthday gift for the star politician after the shoot of the film wrapped up in Patiala. Babbar's birthday was on June 23.

Says a source, "Raj Babbar was taken by surprise. He was, in fact, shocked when he saw the vehicle."

The car is silver in colour and the number plate adds up to five the number Babbar prefers.

Sallu along with his sister Alvira and her hubby Atul Agnihotri (Bodyguard's producer) had been planning the surprise for the past fortnight.

When asked about Sallu's gesture, Raj Babbar's daughter Juhi says, "Yes, Bhai did gift dad a car."

The star MP had been roped in Bodyguard at the last minute to essay the role of Kareena Kapoor's father. He had replaced Shatrughan Sinha, who cited a busy schedule and opted out of the project.

Adds the source, "It was also, Sallu's way of showing his gratitude to Babbar, who had agreed to be part of the film at such short notice."

Interestingly, the Babbar-Khan friendship goes a long way. Babbar and Sallu's father Salim Khan have know each other for decades.

In November 2009, Salman had specially flown to Firozabad in Uttar Pradesh to campaign for Raj Babbar, who was contesting the parliamentary by-elections.

Director Madhur Bhandarkar's blame against Aishwarya Rai Bachchan for hiding her pregnancy did not go well with father-in-law and superstar Amitabh Bachchan. He spoke in defense of Ash and said that the claim of the director having a financial lose of 18 crore is totally untrue. He argues that every actor has the right to get married and children and their can't be any contact of no pregnancy clause while signing a film.

He said in an interview, 'Everybody knew that Aishwarya was married when she signed the film. So you mean to say that actors can't get married or have children? I don't think this can be a part of any contract that you cannot get married or have children if you working in a project".

Bachchan is upset with the banner, UTV too. "I had completed Shoe Bite long back. I had also invested my time into it and completed the film which was based on Johnny Walker. I have never indulged in this kind of talk even though the film has not been released till now and I have no word about when it will be released," says Bachchan.

Speaking in favor of Ash, a close friend of the actress said, "They have not paid her anything for the film. All this hue and cry about losses is false as they had only shot for seven to 10 days, out of which the first few days were spent in photo-shoots and location shoots. The actual film shooting hadn't even begun. Ash is very upset with the fact that she's being targeted for being pregnant — a time when people should be happy for her".

Hrithik Roshan will live Amitabh Bachchan's role as Dinanath Chauhan in Karan Johar's 'Agneepath' remake. The actor has toned his body to fit into the role. The first look saw Hrithik running with a red band around his head, wearing a red outfit with splashes of color over his face and body. Sanjay Dutt steps into the role of a villain which was originally portrayed by Danny Denzongpa. Sanjay shaved off his head to look deadly in the movie.

Priyanka Chopra is playing the female lead. Rishi Kapoor will be seen in a negative role. The role of Mithun Chakraborty was omitted in the remake. Directd by Karan Malhotra, the film will see the light of the day on January 13, 2010.

Hrithik's look in the film was revealed when Karan Johar officially posted the link to the Agneepath's facebook page on twitter.

Produced by Karan Johar's father late Yash Johar, the film failed at the box-office but Big B's role as Dinanath Chauhan was appreciated.

Deepika Padukone wanted a song like Mora Piya from the film Rajneeti to be picturised on her — just like the way it was picturised on actors Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif. Known for the melodious music in his films, Jha, for his upcoming film Aarakshan, was surprised when he heard of Padukone's request.

A source adds, "Deepika is a smart girl and knows exactly how to put forward her wishes. Before the film's shooting, Deepika requested via sms to Prakash Jha to feature a love ballad on her, with a happy face smiley at the end. And her wish was granted. It was bound to — as where most actors reserve peculiar demands for their directors and are in the news for their tantrums. It was clear that Padukone's charming approach to get her special song worked."

When asked about the request, Padukone said, "I remember how Mora piya was such a rage. I remember messaging him (Prakash Jha) to please give me a good romantic song in his new film because Prakashji has a really good sense of music. I was really looking forward to shooting this song and it's turned out amazing. Till now, Mora piya was always played on loop on my mp3 player wherever I was travelling. But now its Seedhe point pe aaona, which is such a playful and cute romantic song."

The song features Padukone opposite actor Saif Ali Khan.

News : John-Abhishek to recreate dostana in 'Kaante 2'

John Abraham and Abhishek Bachhan created a memorable chemistry in 'Dostana'. Their male bonding has been appreciated by the audience and both the guys at the same time enjoyed working opposite each other. Since talk for the sequel to 'Dostana' was doing for quite sometime, John and Abhishek did not sign any film together but as till date, 'Dostana 2' has not been decided, the duo without waiting long signed 'Kaante 2'.

They will share screen space with Arjun Rampal and Bobby Deol. A source reveals, "Abhishek and John's great chemistry in Dostana earned them a lot of fans. Both actors are very fond of each other.

They were looking forward to work again in the second edition of the film and consequently didn't sign any other movies. But since Dostana 2 isn't probably happening, they have decided to stop waiting for it.

They always wanted to do another franchise and Kaante 2 fitted the bill perfectly. They have heard the script and given their consent but the official announcement is yet to be made."

The film will be directed by Hollywood director of Mask and The Scorpion King, Chuck Russel.

The source adds, "The film is directed by a Hollywood director of Mask and The Scorpion King, Chuck Russel and will be shot in South Africa."

Producer Shabbir Boxwala informs, "The film is in a very raw stage. We are planning to put it together. According to paper work Raju Patel holds the rights. Since he is no more, I am planning to make the sequel with his younger brother Uru patel."

About casting he says, "We have not approached Abhishek and John. Arjun and Bobby are my dear friends, so I had a casual chat with them. But we haven't approached anyone officially."

He confirms about the Hollywood director. "Russel was a dear friend of Raju Patel and was always interested in making a Bollywood film. We are in talks with him. Since he is a big name we will surely have a fancy star cast in the film."

Abhishek Bachchan paid a visit to the Hanuman temple in Shimla to pray for the soon to become mother Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. The couple has been married for the last four years and at this moment kids has become the top-most priority for them. News : Bhandarkar blames Ash for hiding pregnancy truth

Filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar is in depressed state of mind. He does not know how to react as his most ambitious project 'Heroine' shelved. He had worked on the script of 'Heroine' for one and a half years and was taken aback to know that the main protagonist of the movie Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is five months pregnant. He was happy for Ash but at the same time depressed thinking about the faith of his film. He panic why Ash did not inform him earlier.

He blames Aishwarya for hiding the pregnancy news. Madhur said that if he had known it before he could not have announced the movie at Cannes and would not have shot the first look of 'Heroine'. It was a huge film and everything was almost settled and the film was to go on floors on June 7. Knowing the news at this stage is a huge loss for the entire unit.

The main protagonist need to do things which a pregnant woman could not afford to do so and hence Madhur could not drag a pregnant woman to do things which may bring trouble to her new born. She needs to smoke, run, drenched on waterfalls, go physical with the male leads. The filmmaker feels that if some unpleasant things happen during the shoot then he would never able to forgive himself.

Madhur has decided to put 'Heroine' on hold at the moment.
