Life After Recruitment: Making it in the Greek World

Greek recruitment is an exciting time – you've been rushing about from event to event, dressing your best and meeting the people you hope to spend the rest of your college days with. It really is a "rush" of feeling when you get that bid and formally accept your invite into the Greek chapter you've been dreaming of. So now what? You've read all the Greek recruitment "musts", but what is Greek life like after rush?

  • Get Balanced. You're officially busier than you've ever been. Your schedule is now filled with classes and your usual extracurricular activities, plus sorority meetings, community service projects with your chapter and fundraisers to organize and plan. Get in the habit of using a calendar, such as Google Calendar, to record all of your appointments. Jotting it down and setting reminders for yourself helps take the stress off your shoulders.
  • Involve Yourself. There's no hand-holding in college and the same goes for being a Greek. Your sisters are there to support you, but it's up to you to involve yourself in community service opportunities and volunteer to help out with fundraisers. We know it can be a little hard to put yourself out there at first, but if you feel nervous, instead of shying away — be bold and get out there!
  • Make Time To Study. We have a feeling you'll fall in love with Greek life, but one of the cons we've heard from first-time sisters is a decline in their grades. Greeks, on average, have a higher GPA than non-Greeks, but that first semester as a sorority sister can be a little daunting. Set at least one hour aside each night to review your notes from class and study. Staying on top of your studies is one less thing you'll need to worry about and you won't have to sacrifice a night of fun for a chemistry all-nighter!
  • Make New Friends, But Keep The Old. You're going to be so swept up in Greek life that it's easy to slack on hanging out with your "old", non-Greek college friends. The more genuine friends, the merrier, so while you're making new friends with your sisters and getting those memories going, remember to spend time with the friends who have helped to shape your personality. There's nothing wrong with adding reminders to text or call your "old" friends – anything to help you stay connected during this transition is great!
  • Budget your cash flow. Despite what the media portrays us as, Greeks are on average not wealthy. There are chapter dues to be paid and it's tempting to want to buy a new outfit for each event you and your sisters hold or attend. Be frugal — you want to have some cash on-hand throughout the entire semester, not just the first three weeks! Consult with your sorority sisters on ways to spice up the outfits you already have, or do a clothes swap within your chapter house.

We're excited that you've entered into Greek life and accepted your bid into a chapter house! It's a fun transition in your life, and it's a wonderful time to meet new friends and have experiences that you'll be talking about twenty years from now. Just remember to stay grounded and be yourself – it's a busy time, but you'll be a Greek life pro and writing an article just like this in no time!
