| Helpful Hints for Homesickness Posted: 22 Sep 2011 05:50 PM PDT By Madison of Samford University. Follow me @freckshairbows. Whether you are sitting in class or bumming around in your room, here are a few ways to cure the "I want to go home" blues. - Call Mom- Just give in and call her. It may seem silly especially if you are trying to be really independent in college, but hearing a familiar voice from home really helps. Just be careful not to call too much!
- Find a group of new friends- College is a place with so many possibilities of finding new friends, all you have to do is put yourself out there. If you are really shy, just start small by talking to a student next to you in a class. From there, you can gain confidence to approach others and at college there is honestly a group for EVERYONE!
Photo Credit - Send Snail Mail- Pen and paper letters are a great way to be in contact with ones you love. Not only is it an awesome surprise to find in your mailbox, but your pen pal will love it too. Try not to stick with the average letter format. Send different things like Mad Libs or coloring pages, just to be silly. With every letter you receive, be sure to keep them all in one place so you can read a few later when you are feeling a little down.
- Have a snack- Sometimes the cafeteria food can be pretty nasty and spending time with an empty stomach can make anyone irritable or moody. Buy your favorite snack at the local Walmart or grocery store to have handy in your room. Facing your next class with a full stomach will make it easier to get through a long lecture or presentation.
- Put a few pictures up- Images of home and your friends can serve as good reminders of the times you had, but leave room on your walls for new pictures of the memories you will make at college!
Photo Credit - Have a moment to yourself- Alone time is also a good idea to try. Spending time alone watching tv or listening to music helps you relax about the week ahead and focus on what needs to be done. It can be overwhelming being around people all the time with classmates, people on the hall, and your roommate. Take some time to yourself to reboot.
- Give it TIME!- Adjusting to your new surroundings can be hard, but be patient. Your college experience will all come together in time. Just be yourself around others and stay positive for the times to come!
