My Rush Experience

Before I went through Rush, I started having second thoughts about the whole process. I had no idea what it would be like, who was in each house or what type of commitment it really was. I didn't know if I would fit into the Greek life world and what it meant to be in a sorority.

At Samford University, we had a day of Open House, where we got to look into each sorority’s housing. Samford has five sororities, so the recruitment process was a little hectic. There were about 290 girls that went through the process and about 90 got cut. Each night brought up its own challenges about deciding which house I wanted to cut and others that I wanted to keep. Rush is a process that feels a lot like a ton of job interviews, but in the end it was worth it. Check out this article written by Piper about Sorority Recruitment! I was given a bid from the Phi Mu house at Samford and I was so excited! It was my first choice and I was so thankful that I got in!

The weekend that followed Bid Day, all of the new pledges went on a retreat. We went outside of Alabama to a fellow sister's home where her mother hosted us for the weekend. We watched a movie out on the grass together and ate delicious home cooked meals — quite the luxury for college students. The following day we took group pictures on a local college campus. It was so much fun getting to capture some memories that I’ll remember for forever. Some girls walked around the trails on campus while others stayed by the pavilion and hung out. It was great getting to know some of the girls I hadn't met before this experience. We also participated in bonding activities that really opened my eyes to the amazing girls that I get to call my sisters.

Rush is definitely not for everyone. It is a harsh process that can lead to rejections and confusing decisions. Some handle it better than others, but I would advise you to give it a try. It can be helpful in learning how to meet new people and understanding how to accept rejection from other houses. It can be a hard trial in life to go through for some, but for others it can be an amazing decision that leads to life-long friendships.
