A raw rugged cop's tale of vicious vendetta fused into a tender romance seems like a hard act to live up to. But Nishikant Kamat, seeking inspiration from a hit Tamil film "Kaakha Kaakha" manages just fine.

He gets incredible support from dialogue writer Ritesh Shah, who infuses every exchange on love (with the girl who won't take no for an answer) and war (against drug peddlers) with a kind of lived-in warmth and familiarity.

Kamat, who earlier made "Mumbai Meri Jaan" on terrorism and the city of Mumbai, here has a blast bringing back the old-fashioned action hero. John Abraham has worked hard on his physique and his expressions too look like a cop who thinks falling in love would take him away from his line of duty.

Enter the vivacious effervescent girl nextdoor. Genelia with her multiplicity of expressions aptly plays "Bubbly" to this duty-bound "Bunty" who would rather not get entangled in human foibles like love and family. But the inevitable happens.

Kamat lovingly weaves the love story between the impish girl nextdoor and the gentle giant into the persistent call of duty, making sure the film's claims to be an action film doesn't get drowned in mush.

While the first hour is a loose bag of striking shootouts staged in crowded localities of Mumbai and some highly dispensable romantic songs, it is the second-hour where the narration really gathers momentum pitching the relentless cop against his chief adversary a drug dealer named Vishnu, played with arresting elan by debutant Vidyut Jamwal.

The man-to-man confrontations between Abraham and Jamwal have a rousing rugged resonance to them. They may make you squirm with their brutality. But the two look like well-matched opponents. Action director Allan Amin devises combats that convey a bone-crunching realism.

The two adversaries take care of the rest. John gives a finely pitched performance looking every inch like the action hero who can deliver that punch. He handles both the brutal and tender moments in the violence and romance, with ease.

Newcomer Vidyut Jamwal makes a formidable adversary. The menace is not only in the physique but the tone. This man means business. Some of the supporting cast is interesting too.

"Force" is a full-on action film with balls, brawn and brains. It's the kind of virile cinema where action speaks louder than words. Blessedly the narrative secretes some fine dialogues and tender love story that goes with the turbulent territory. Nishikant Kamat balances out the colour khaki with sharp colours of humour and romance.

Tere Mere Phere : Movie Review

Posted: 01 Oct 2011 11:32 AM PDT

Though comedy has grown into a lush genre over the years, few directors in India have mastered the art of relaying it on celluloid. "Tere Mere Phere" is an earnest endeavour by actress turned director Deepa Sahi.

"Tere Mere Phere" is not only a romantic comedy, it is a black comedy, slapstick comedy, satire, comedy of manners, screwball comedy -- all rolled in one. Deepa's attempt to weave in every sub-genre of comedy is probably the nemesis of the movie.

The premise of this film is about compatibility in a marriage. The story revolves around two couples - Rahul and Pooja (Jagrat Desai and Sasha Goradia) and Jai and Muskaan (Vinay Pathak and Riya Sen). Their lives get intertwined by fate.

A squabbling Rahul and Pooja are on their way to Shimla by flight. They are on the verge of splitting after three days of honeymooning in a motor home, travelling in Himachal.

But the aborted landing of their aircraft takes them back to their incomplete honeymoon with Jai for company. Jai is desperate to meet his sweetheart Muskaan, who would be forcibly married by her brother to some other bloke.

The narration slips in and out of numerous cantankerous moments of flashbacks to reveal to a lovelorn Jai as to why they (Rahul and Pooja) are bickering all the time. By the end of it, Jai is convinced, by watching Rahul and Pooja, that familiarity breeds contempt.

He decides that marriage is not for him. He makes a decision to desert his waiting Muskaan. Roles reverse with the climax culminating at the hilarious fast forward wedding of Jai and Muskaan.

The scuffle in the aircraft cabin with force fed humour sets the tone of the film for a mediocre fare. The scenes that follow seem substandard and clumsy. With no detailing done, the characters seem to be shallow.

The plot has no major inciting moments and with screechy loud dialogues like - "Tum kya Eskimo thi?", "Tum kya chipkali ho?" and "You are queen of Main Main", "No you are king of che chee". The script along with the dialogues seems to be the weakest point of the film.

The film belongs to the newcomers Jagat Desai and Sasha Goradia. For first timers, they exude confidence. Sushmita Mukherjee as Rahul's overbearing mother is convincing. Riya Sen with a naturally poker face and sing song expressionless dialogue delivery is a bad choice for a comedy film.

Vinay Patak is wasted as he hardly has anything to do in the film.

On the other hand, the verdant Himalayan terrain is beautifully captured by cinematographer Christo Bakalov. The film has been shot in beautiful and unusual parts of Himachal, especially in the newly opened Kinnaur Valley. The climax of the film has been shot at Hatu Peak and Jhamunda (near Tethys Resort, Narkanda).

The music by Shivangi R. Kashyap is nothing to write home about.

The first half of the film is just tolerable. The second half has its moments of extreme comedy. The end is equally disappointing leaving the viewers wondering as to why you wanted to witness this meaningless marriage.

Hum Tum Shabana : Movie Review

Posted: 01 Oct 2011 11:30 AM PDT

Every now and then you see people and call some actors or filmmakers one film wonders. It wouldn't be wrong to do so in case of Sagar Ballary too. The man changed the face of Hindi cinema with his smart and witty comedy Bheja Fry however, ever since then he hasn't managed to live up to the level of brilliance he first achieved. The filmmaker yet again takes his shot at comedy with Hum Tum Shabana. The promos have been doing the rounds and have created enough pre-release buzz for the film with its contagious party hopping songs. But can this be enough to battle it out with John Abraham's action packed Force that also releases this week? Well time will tell.

Two guys Rishi Malhotra (Tusshar Kapoor) and Kartik Iyer (Shreyas Talpade) live their lives trying to outdo each other in their office. Interestingly, while working for a beauty pageant, the two fall head over heels for a contestant Shabana (Minissha Lamba). Then comes the twist in this madcap apparent entertainer. They have to battle it out for her as suggested by Shabana's chacha (Satish Kaushik) who also happens to be an underworld don. Who gets to keep Shabana follows through a series of slapstick scenes.

For the lack of better words, Hum Tum Shabana in one word is a HORRID film. After many slapstick attempts on celluloid in the past, one does know that one's supposed to keep their brains at home and all that while watching a madcap entertainer. But at least such a film should guarantee some entertainment and not a ham fest with each and every situation or each and every actor succumbing in their attempts to humour you.

While the entire first half revolves around Beauty Pageant contest, ramp shows and model's rivalry giving you a feel of watching a tawdry version of Madhur Bhandarkar's Fashion, the second half of the film dips to unbeatable lows defining new areas of fault-making and fault-finding. The climax is so badly written and shot that a tyro from film school would do a better job than that. Not only is the script headless and directionless, the screenplay, dialogues and characterisation too is full of flaws.

Both Tusshar Kapoor and Shreyas Talpade do a decent job at trying to hold the story that keeps going all over the place but their attempts go in vain. Minissha Lamba barely gets a role to perform. All she does in the entire film is smile and bat eyelids in a typical girly fashion. Pia Trivedi is completely wasted and her track makes no sense. Maybe she is only there for that one item song which too could easily be used in just film promotions.

Satish Kaushik and Sanjay Mishra who otherwise are brilliant in their comic acts and possess stupendous comic timing too falter in this film and do not manage to make people laugh. Music is the only highlight of the film and its mainstay. Composers Sachin and Jigar who last gave a chartbusting album Faltu yet again succeed in giving some great tracks.

Over all, Hum Tum Shabana ke liye kabhi na jaana. A film best avoided.

Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster : Movie Review

Posted: 01 Oct 2011 11:28 AM PDT

There definitely have been zillion remakes of zillion films in the past but Tigmanshu Dulia dishes out a reprised version of cult classic Saheb Biwi Aur Ghulam with an added new age twist in the plot with the title Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster. Been in news for its bold scenes, Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster (SBAG) is much more than a sex based film.

Saheb that is Aditya Pratap Singh (Jimmy Shergill) is a Pauper Prince, a King whose royalty has been evaded due to the changing times leading to bankruptcy. In order to desperately keep his lifestyle, Saheb maintains his own political nexus. His wife Chhoti Rani i.e. the Biwi (Mahie Gill) turns hysterical due to her unrequited love for Saheb. She yearns for his love and attention but Saheb's smitten by his mistress Mahua.

Enters Babloo i.e. the Gangster (Randeep Hooda), an opportunist or Moka-tarian as he likes to call himself, who wants to climb up the ladder and dethrone Saheb. He joins Saheb's house as a drive and soon an affair sparks off between the lovelorn Biwi and the opportunist Gangster. Babloo's insatiable ambitions lead to a big cat and mouse chase of power and money.

The biggest strength of Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster lies in its narration. This sex-based political drama has each and every element of filmmaker in the right dose. So not only there are strong undercurrents of political hustle, but also the love track in the right amount. Never for once does any track try to overpower the other. There's a perfect blend of love, lust and lethal political war of power and money.

The script is edgy and crisp and the screenplay tight. There's not a moment in the where you get time to even blink your eyes. The first half moves quickly. You do feel a slack in the second half but that too comes only for a few minutes. The story picks up once again and ends on a thrilling note.

Filmmaker Tigmanshu Dhulia flawlessly captures the badlands of North India and succeeds commendably in presenting a realistic and gritty drama. The level of detailing that he does for SBAG is laudable. The dialogues, the character-sketch, the setting and the plot all ride on the director's shoulder and are executed with great finesse.

If Tigmanshu presents a stupendous narrative, even the actors impress the audience with their performance. Jimmy Shergill is perfect as the royal Saheb, Mahie fits the bill of a lovelorn Biwi and Randeep Hooda is brilliant as roadside Romeo turned gangster.

Music and background score are also in sync with the film with two songs Chu Chu Chu and I love to love you standing out from the lot!

Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster is meant for smart audience that doesn't enter the cinema hall expected crass masala flick in the name of entertainment.

The case was asked to be dismissed by the police as the victims allegations proved to be false, during the investigation.
