Posted: 09 Oct 2011 10:39 AM PDT ![]() A very safe bet in Hindi film industry is to release a comedy on a festive occasion. No matter how it is, it always breaks records. Taking the safer route comes Sanjay Dutt who releases his debut home production venture Rascals on Dusshera. Whether the festivity translates in to huge queues at the ticket windows or not remains to be seen. Two conmen Bhagat Bhosle (Ajay Devgn) and Chetan Chauhan (Sanjay Dutt) spend most of their time trying to outdo each other whenever their paths cross. After having duped a small time don Anthony (Arjun Rampal) the two take off to Bangkok and meet a hot and rich model Khushi (Kangna Ranaut). That's when their new conning plan takes off and both try to outwit each other by winning Khushi's heart and money. Who takes the cake eventually follows through a series of madcap incidents. Directed by David Dhawan, a man once known solely for tickling your funny bones seems to be in his struggling phase. That's the only way one can define the poor direction effort made in this slapstick comedy. Though the film takes off very well it ends up being the same old comedy one is seeing over the last few months. Bollywood filmmakers definitely have found some combination of comedy and noise and maybe that's just why almost all recent comedies have ended up being blaring. For example, Bin Bulaye Baraati, Double Dhamaal, Chatursingh Two Star, Ready, Tere Mere Phere and the recent Hum Tum Shabana. Even Rascals falls in the same category. The entire second half where the main confusion lies is all about loud and jarring background score and actors yelling without any mercy on the audience. Though thoughtful, the dialogues throughout the film are mostly rhythmic bordering on almost sounding corny. For example, Ghadi ho toh Rado, Gaadi ho toh Prado aur serial ho toh Na Aana Is Des Lado. Some of the jokes do make you guffaw and chuckle while some over used and abused SMS jokes turn out to be big irritants. The cinematography of the film is very glossy and stylish and definitely there seems no cut back on the quality of the shoot. Rascals could've been better, more like All The Best that had both Ajay Devgn and Sanjay Dutt had it been for better situational comedy instead of the conmen drama. On the acting front both Ajay and Sanjay do a decent job. Just because the film may have taken a substantial amount of time in the shooting, Sanjay Dutt's hairdo painfully keeps changing throughout the film making you easily point out the continuity errors. While in one look he has black wig with a look reminding you of the terrorising Chatursingh Two Star, in the other the colour of the wig changes to light brown. Despite her consecutive failed attempts at comedy like No Problem, Ready, Double Dhamaal Kangna stills finds her way in Rascals without showing no improvement whatsoever. The actress is as bad in her comic timing as she was in her first attempt at comedy. Lisa Hayden is clearly dubbed and has nothing but a few scenes here and there apart from her item number Shake It Saiyyan. Arjun Rampal in his cameo acts well while Chunky Pandey is passable. Over all, Rascals will work only with those who love to wishfully forget their brains at home while going for a film. For those seeking substance in cinema, Rascals will make you look like a rascal for having made the choice.
Posted: 09 Oct 2011 10:42 AM PDT ![]() When you remake a film officially, you have so much to fall back on - a readymade story, the entire scenario, and the screenplay etc. In such cases, one expects a good watch by default. Though not a lot of people may know that the minimally publicised Rajeev Khandelwal starrer Soundtrack is an actual remake of Canadian film It's All Gone Pete Tong one does expect some strong storyline from the looks of the promo. Whether it lives up to the expectations or not remains to be seen. Soundtrack is the story of a music composer cum singer cum DJ Raunak Kaul (Rajeev Khandelwal) who comes to Mumbai with dreams of making it big in Music industry. He starts out as a DJ and turns out to be huge star of a club Tango Charlie run by Charlie (Mohan Kapoor). While the chronic alcoholic takes to alcoholism, drugs and smoking in a big way, success keeps following the DJ until a cruel turn of events changes his life forever. Soundtrack traces the rise, fall and 're-rise' of a character who eats, sleeps and thrives on music. There are some films that sound very interesting and thrilling on papers but the moment they translate on celluloid, their magic just fades away. The case with Soundtrack apparently seems the same. Think of that one event in your life that completely takes away all that you ever had or wanted. Scary isn't it? That's exactly something that the film tries projecting with the idea of a passionate and successful DJ suddenly turning deaf; his rise from the ashes giving way to one of the most inspirational stories. However, nothing quite like that happens on screen. What you get in turn is pretentious plot, pretentious acting and pretentious execution. Raunak Kaul's rise and fall doesn't quite engage you enough to feel the high of getting wasted like a junkie the way he feels, to feel his plight when he goes numb on music or to feel his passion for music when he beats his shortcoming and rises back like a phoenix. Moreover, there's an angle of Raunak's alter ego nagging him in the form of a clown that stays with him 24*7 never making him wonder or react to it strongly; a very amusing element poorly written. The first half of the film hangs very loosely on threadbare execution with as many as 3 sequences that could well be interval points. The second half of the film does bring in the crux of the storyline making for an interesting watch. Filmmaker Neerav Ghosh's direction is extremely poor making his film look more like a tawdry piece of work so much so that there are errors that don't need an expert's eye. For example, a bad close-up of a heavily bearded Raunak where even the gum of his fake wig can be seen, or even a scene where Mrinalini Sharma removes her bikini on beach while her skin coloured inner can easily be seen; so much for skin show! There are many club shots where the camerawork could be better to increase the impact of Raunak's trance mood. There definitely hasn't been any focus on authenticity too as you see Rajeev Khandelwal taking Soha Ali Khan on a date to a fancy restaurant where the two only order for double whiskey shots, don't eat anything and ask for the bill. Even at that the bill for three double whiskey shots comes up to only 530 Rupees, an unrealistic price in today's inflated time. Rajeev Khandelwal is decent in parts but comes across as a misfit in this story in more cases than one. Even his dialogue delivery seems faulty. Soha Ali Khan is delightfully pleasing while Mohan Kapoor does a good job as Charlie. Music by various artistes is very good with some of the remixes like Yeh Jeevan Hai, Ruk Jaana Nahi standing out. Editing of the film could've been better. Over all, Soundtrack is decent in parts and could've made for a very upheaving watch had it been for better execution.

Love Breakups Zindagi : Movie Review Posted: 09 Oct 2011 10:45 AM PDT ![]() The story about love and breakups has been told innumerable times in Bollywood. Despite being monotonous, this particular theme always gets a place in Bollywood and was appreciated by the audience. Sahil Sangha directed Love Breakups Zindagi also falls in the same line. A repetitive story wins the heart of the audience when the same plot is given a different treatment and presented with little twists and turns. But LBZ has nothing new to tell and that is the reason why the film could not win the heart of the audience. It is a debut production venture of Dia Mirza, Zayed Khan and Sahil Sangha named Bonfire entertainment. Dia and Zayed have played the lead role to give something interesting to the audience. It is a story about friendship, relationship, love and breakups. It talks about the relationship of Zayed-Dia-Vaibhav and Cyrus-Tisca. Two stories run side by side. The film starts off well but becomes monotonous in the end. The climax is very ordinary. The film has nothing new to offer. Jai (Zayed Khan) is a marketing executive in Delhi. He is of the opinion that opposite attracts. Jai is attracted towards bossy girl Radhika (Pallavi Sharda) who is totally opposite to him. On the other side, Naina (Dia Mirza) who is a photographer by profession went all out to woo her workaholic investment banker boyfriend Dhruv (Vaibhav Talwar). But destiny has something else stored for them. Jai and Naina get to meet each other at Jai's best buddy Arjun (Satyadeep Misra) and Naina's good friend Gayatri's (Auritra Ghosh) wedding in Chandigarh. Both liked each other but there is little hesitation as both are already in a committed relationship. Meanwhile, we see Jai and Arjun's friend Govind (Cyrus Sahukar) gets close to Arjun's aunt Sheila (Tisca Chopra). Govind is an interesting character. He is divorced twice but still open to making new girl friends. The wedding gets over and everybody goes back to their routine work. However, Jai happens to visit Mumbai for some work and decides to catch up with Dia. Meanwhile, Govind's love life also falls on track. He was seen having coffee date with Sheila. Shahrukh Khan plays himself in the film and says in the end, "Eventually in life and films everything has a happy ending". Salim-Sulaiman's music is ear-soothing. Song Rab Rakkha stands out. As far as the direction is concerned, Sahil Sangha excels in this department. He is very clear about what he is doing. Not at all messy, it is very simple and beautiful. Speaking about performances, the film totally belongs to Dia Mirza and Zayed Khan. They are the soul of the film. Being a first time producer and experienced actors, both the starts has done full justice to their role. They emote the funny moments and emotional parts with full perfection. Other actors like Tisca Chopra, Cyrus Sahukar, Satyadeep Misra, Auritra Ghosh and Vaibhav Talwar are natural actors and have done a superb job. Umang Jain and Farida Jalal are lovable. However, Soni Razdan doesn't have much to do in the film. In the nutshell, 'Love Breakups Zindagi' is a lovely light hearted film. Basically, the film is for the youngsters. Not a bad watch.
