Elizabeth Taylor died on Wednesday, March 23, 2011, at the age of 79 leaving behind many friends and family, along with her many fans who adored her from the beginning. She also happened to leave behind a massive collection of jewelry, clothing and other collectable items that will go up for auction December 3rd- 16th at the famous Christie’s Auction Showroom in New York. Christie’s has decided to devote its entire Rockefeller Center gallery space for the showing and sales. Christie’s announced they are expecting to draw several thousand visitors daily, and that a portion of the proceeds made will be donated to the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation. The public viewing for the items will be held from Dec. 3 to 12. With the auctions starting on Dec. 13 and ending on Dec. 16. The sales that are being held are the following:
33.19 carats diamond ring given to Elizabeth Taylor by her fifth husband Richard Burton, that is expected to get $2.5 – $3.5 million dollars at auction. Christie’s website (here), goes more in to depth about the collections themselves, so if you have a moment and are interested, I highly recommend reading. There has been much buzz about the auction itself since it was announced, and several celebrities, including Kim Kardashian, have talked about the upcoming auction on their Twitter accounts. Unfortunately, it’s not in the cards for me to go to the auction — though I desperately wish I could! I can’t even begin to imagine how spectacular everything will look. The glittering of all of the stunning jewels and costumes, and oh the jewellery! I’m trying to pinch myself out of daydreams filled with sparkly treasures. Don’t think you can’t get in on the action too. Although we don’t have thousands to shell out on timeless pieces — I’m assuming—, they have certain items for bidding online. All you need to do is register and you can bid away at some of the more “reasonably-priced” items. (I use the term “reasonably-priced” loosely here). Thoughts? What is your favourite Elizabeth Taylor film? If you were able to, would you attend the auction, or the viewing beforehand? Would you buy something if you were fabulously rich? Email us at info@college-style.com, tweet us @CollegeStyle12, or me @meggles_07! We love to hear what you beauties think! Also, look for my follow-up article. After the auction I will let all of you know what went for how much, and who bought what fabulous items as soon as my little ears get the information! |
| How to Wear Shorts with Tights Posted: 23 Nov 2011 08:44 AM PST By: Anna of Loras College I’m big on getting the most milage out of my wardrobe and making the most possible combinations out of pieces I already have. If you’re like me, you feel you can never have enough clothing and mixing things up helps you feel less deprived. Wearing shorts with tights is a trendy way to extend the wearability of your clothes. It’s something we saw a lot of celebs doing this year, mostly with demin shorts and black tights. While you can be more creative, this combo is a safe fall back. The good news is you don’t have to be Jesse J. or Selena Gomez to rock this trend! Here is some inspiration on how to make this look work for you and your personal style. Punk GirlyThis look is simple and follows the most popular model of denim with black tights. It looks edgy, but still girly. If you wanted to toughen it up, swap the floral patten tights for fishnets and the necklace for a choker. PrepsterThis look is very preppy and feminine — perfect for girls who have internships, presentations or engagements that require looking a little more dressed-up. These thick shorts and cozy wool tights should keep you warm, even if you’re walking in blustery fall weather to and from buildings and vehicles. A Pop of ColorThese blue shorts and bold and beautiful- an awesome way to incorperate bright colors even though the weather is getting colder. I’ve paired them with soft gray pieces so the outfit isn’t too busy and the high-waisted shorts really get to shine. This fashion-forward option is a great choice for a morning class or lunch date. Copy CatThis outfit is a copy of Jessie J’s. I love the leopard print tights and pairing them with a gray sweater is bold and fashion-forward rather than simply basic black. This is the outfit to wear to impress the girls — leather shorts are totally trendy. The pair I’ve chosen are faux leather, being kind to animals and your wallet. Few things are sassier or cattier than leopard print, so get your catwoman on. Meow. Thoughts? There are lots of ways to wear shorts and tights! What do you think? Do you like the look? Would you wear it or do you already? Which celeb do you think pull the look off the best? Let us know what you think by leaving a comment below! |
| Posted: 22 Nov 2011 08:44 AM PST By: Emily of The University of Georgia. Follow me @emilyhovis. I think it's time for a confession: I am terrified of birds. It doesn't matter if it's hummingbird-sized or ostrich-sized, I will cower like a small child in its presence. Perhaps this irrational fear stems from the time I was attacked by pigeons in St. Mark's Square. Maybe this fear was born in response to the birds who annually nest in my home's front porch who have an affinity for darting out in front of me when I leave. And although it's doubtful, it's possible that my fear was born from a too early viewing of Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds." But regardless of its source, people always find my fear to be shocking. Not because birds are a pointless thing to be afraid of, but because my room and wardrobe are practically a shrine to the avian species. Just a few of the birds I have scattered about my room. I don't know what it is about them, but I find birds to be the perfect accessory. They are so whimsical and seemingly carefree. This summer, I discovered that I really love to paint. I love the feeling of a paintbrush in my hand and the endless possibilities of the blank canvas in front of me. And by endless possibilities, I mean the few things that I can paint that somewhat resemble their original form. After much experimentation, I found that I can, in fact, paint birds. My apartment has a large white wall that was screaming for something, anything, to bring life to it. So, being the resourceful and severely broke person that I am, I decided to create my own art. Now, every morning when I wake up, I am greeted by the whimsical birds that I painted, and the never ending pecking of a woodpecker right outside my window (yet another reason to hate birds). I never said I was the next Monet, but they get the job done. I'm sure you all have noticed that in the past couple of years, birds have inundated boutiques. You can't go anywhere without seeing owl necklaces and bird figurines, and I can't go anywhere without buying them. I love my bedroom and the eclectic whimsical feeling that it has, and I can thank my countless bird accessories for my room's Zooey Deschanel in "500 Days of Summer" vibe. On my desk, in lieu of the typical pencil cup, I have one of my most prized possessions- a vintage owl mug. On my bed, I have some quirky owl throw pillows, courtesy of my sister. Hanging from my ceiling are the results of a particularly crafty and inspired summer's day: my collection of paper swans. However, my absolute favorite bird homage in my room is my vintage birdcage. I shudder to think that it once contained a live bird, but the whimsical eccentric touch that it brings to my room is worth its lewd past. The perfect decoration. Photo Credit. However, my love for all (nonliving) birds does not just pertain to my room; birds have nested in my closet. These days, nearly every dress, shirt and accessory, for that matter, bears a unique and fun pattern or print. And fortunately for me, and hopefully for you, many of these patterns feature playful birds of many colors and species. In addition, it seems that it's nearly impossible for accessories designers to create a piece of jewelry without placing a quirky owl or a pensive sparrow on a branch. These playful pieces can help tone down a more serious outfit, and I find that they make a blazer and jeans look more age appropriate. Birds + Fashion = Must Haves I know that birds aren't for everyone, and to some people, the idea of anyone holding Zooey Deschanel's indie style in such high esteem is barbaric (blasphemy!). But to those of you who dream of creating a space and a closet that has a bit of whimsy and a lot of character, I suggest that you take the bird motif and fly away with it. Pardon the pun. Thoughts? Are you as obsessed with birds as I am? Have you noticed the recent surge in bird decor and fashions and fallen in love? Do you dream of whimsical and quirky decor?
