Now That I’ve Caught Your Pinterest

It's taken over my school with a vengeance. During class, everyone around me is methodically scrolling its endless trove of treasures, and during the wee hours of the night, its faithful followers plan their fairytale lives. It makes the most culinary-challenged among us believe we can become the next Paula Deen. It makes the least creative people envision themselves painting, sewing and repurposing flea market finds like Nate Berkus. It makes the most available and single of us all imagine and plan intricately detailed weddings that would rival Kim Kardashian's ceremony. I'm talking about Pinterest, of course, and I am among the millions of people who have become addicted to virtual idea-sharing and collecting.

My pin boards, and yes, in case you were wondering, that is a picture of Jude Law under my “Please”" pin board.

For those of you who haven't become addicted to Pinterest yet, let me break it down for you. The name "Pinterest" comes from the fact that you virtually "pin" your interests onto idea boards. You can arrange and categorize your boards however you see fit, and because your Pinterest account is linked through either your Twitter or your Facebook, you can share your pins with your friends and view their pins in return. According to the Pinterest homepage, the service is ideal for redecorating your home, planning a wedding, finding your style, saving your inspirations and saving your recipes. I have boards for all of these topics (and then some), excluding a wedding planning board (I just don't want to jinx it, you know?).

While I love to pin pictures of cute wardrobe ideas and appetizing hors d'oeurves I hope to make one day when I'm thirty, my favorite things to pin are DIY projects. Now, you don't have to be creative to come up with DIY projects to spruce up your room — you just need access to the internet and a Hobby Lobby within thirty miles. Currently, my "Let's Get Crafty" board has over thirty ideas that I hope to do over my winter break. There are some incredibly creative people out there, and the things they have come up with are amazingly simple yet make a huge impact.

A few of the DIY crafts I’m hoping to get done.

Another thing that can make a huge impact on your day to day life is pinning your ideal wardrobe. Instead of having a running list of things in your mind that you want to add to your closet, you can create an actual collection of pieces you want to buy. Now, when you have some extra cash lying around, instead of going to the mall and buying things you don't really need, you can go to your pinboard and see which items you really want to add to your wardrobe. In addition, you can find many fashion bloggers' outfits that have been pinned and repined by legions of pinners. These bloggers take everyday pieces that you probably already have in your closet and style them in new and unique ways. I can't tell you how many outfits I've worn recently that have been inspired by outfits I've seen on Pinterest.

Many people use Pinterest simply to pin pretty pictures and to pass the time, but Pinterest is a great tool that can be utilized to make your day to day life easier and more stylish. So, next time you're parked in front of your computer on Facebook just waiting for a notification, head on over to www.pinterest.com and become inspired!
