Big B loves Delhi winter

Posted: 17 Dec 2011 11:39 AM PST

New Delhi, Dec 16 (IANS) Amitabh Bachchan's association with Delhi goes back to his college days and the megastar says he still loves the capital's chilly winter.

"Love Delhi in winter... the air, the atmosphere, the flowers, the smell of potent coffee in the lobby of hotels and restaurants - warm clothes, scarves and woolies," Big B posted on his blog Bigb.bigadda.com.

But at the same time, the 69-year-old is worried about Delhi's homeless people and how they brave the cold wave out in the open.

"Then one wonders in dismay, what of those that live off the streets and shiver in front of homemade fires on the street from the trash!! Sad state," he added.

Opposition mounts to Amitabh's plea on anti-Sikh riots

Posted: 17 Dec 2011 07:39 AM PST

Amritsar, Dec 16 (IANS) A move by Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan to get a clean chit from the Sikh clergy after his name was dragged into the 1984 anti-Sikh riots is facing opposition from sections of the community.

Bachchan's plea to the Jathedar (head) of the Akal Takht, the highest temporal seat of Sikh religion, Gurbachan Singh, through a letter dated Nov 28, in which he pleaded his innocence in the anti-Sikh riots, is likely to be considered for discussion by the five Sikh high priests at a meeting here Dec 22.

The letter was delivered to the Akal Takht head by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) member from Mumbai, Gurinder Singh Bawa. The letter from the actor came after he was invited by the Punjab government for the inauguration of the Khalsa Heritage Complex's 'Virasat-e-Khalsa' monument at Anandpur Sahib last month but he did not come after sections of the Sikh community objected.

In his letter, Bachchan wrote: "I am addressing this letter to you with a most pained heart. Wild, irresponsible and most unfounded allegations, by certain sections of the Sikh community, about my involvement in the inciting of violence against them during the most unfortunate Sikh riots of 1984, soon after the death of Shrimati Indira Gandhi, the then prime minister of India, has caused me acute agony.

"These vicious allegations have caused me deep hurt, particularly when they were levelled at a time when I had accepted the invitation from the Punjab government to attend the inaugural ceremony of the historical Khalsa Heritage Complex at Sri Anandpur Sahib, the birthplace of the Khalsa Panth. I was indeed looking forward to attending this sacred ceremony and sharing the immense pleasure and divine bliss with the Sikh Sangat, but declined because I did not want to be the cause for any embarrassment at this historical function.

"Now that the ceremony is over, I wish to take this opportunity to vehemently and categorically deny these allegations against me which are completely baseless, false and untrue. The Nehru-Gandhi family and our family have old ties from our city of origin, Allahabad. We have been together in each other's hour of grief and joy, but to allege that I was a part of the crowd that incited them to raise anti-Sikh slogans is a preposterous and blatant lie. Quite contrarily, I have always propagated the soothing of injured feelings and the maintenance of serenity. The unfortunate incidents of the riots of 1984 against the Sikhs shall always remain a blot and a dark phase in the history of our country, a country that prides itself in its secular credentials."

Continued on next page...
Bachchan even attached a copy of a photograph of his maternal grandparents, who were from a Sikh family. He pointed out that his maternal grandfather, Khazan Singh Suri, was a bar-at-law from England and that his mother, Teji Bachchan, came from a Sikh family.

Akal Takht head Gurbachan Singh, while acknowledging that he had got the letter, said: "The matter is linked to Sikh sentiments. The five Singh Sahibaan (Sikh high priests) will consider his letter and discuss the matter at their meeting. Whatever they decide, the next action will be taken accordingly."

Bachchan pointed out that he had come to the holiest of Sikh shrines, Harmandar Sahib (popularly known as the Golden Temple), here in December 2007 for prayers after the passing away of his mother.

However, Sikh organisations and independent witnesses have now come forward claiming that Bachchan, then close to the Gandhi family, had come out of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi Oct 31, 1984, and instigated crowds. A California-based Sikh, Manjit Singh, who lived in the Kalu Sarai area of Delhi then, said in an affidavit to Akal Takht that he himself saw Bachchan instigating people. Bachchan later became an MP for three years representing the Congress party.

The All India Sikh Students Federation (AISSF), in a statement, alleged that Bachchan's slogans were broadcast in 1984 by the state-owned Doordarshan TV and All India Radio (AIR). The AISSF said independent witnesses like Jagdish Kaur, Babu Singh Dukhiya and others who watched the relay on Doordarshan and saw Bachchan inciting violence are ready to testify in this matter before the Akal Takht.

AISSF said the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal, which controlled the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), was trying to give a clean chit to Bachchan.

Nearly 7,000 Sikhs were killed in the November 1984 anti-Sikh riots in various parts of the country following the assassination of Indira Gandhi by her two Sikh bodyguards in New Delhi Oct 31, 1984. Over 3,000 were killed in Delhi alone.

Amitabh is like a true soldier: Arjun Rampal

Posted: 17 Dec 2011 03:39 AM PST

Mumbai, Dec 16 (IANS) Actor Arjun Rampal, who was last seen in "RA.One", is not only in awe of Amitabh Bachchan as an actor but also as a person and describes him as a true soldier who has braved storms in his life to come out with more passion and creativeness.

"For me, the true soldier really is a person like Mr. Amitabh Bachchan, who has nothing but love for what he does, nothing but complete endurance... he has endured everything -- the ups, the downs and everything, and still keeps coming out and recreating himself," the 39-year-old actor said here at the Gillette Saluting Soldier.

Arjun, who has worked with Amitabh in "Aaakhen" and "The Last Lear", loves the way Big B keeps re-inventing himself even at the age of 69.

"He is one of those actors who never created a shelf life for himself. An actor who reinvents himself all the time and is still there and still doing some wonderful work even at his age. He is such a good brand ambassador of the Indian film industry to the world... a true soldier," Arjun said.

Arjun feels that Amitabh's discipline should be a source of inspiration for budding actors.

"He is a man who wakes up at 6 a.m. and this is a discipline. This is something we should all learn. He is in the gym at 7 a.m. At around 8-8:30, he has a stack of newspapers which go all around the world, and he reads every single newspaper. At 9:30, he is on the set, he switches his mobile phone off, and he is the character you want him to be," Arjun said.

"I was always intimidated by him, but he also taught me that your best friends when you are shooting a film should be your team members -- your co-stars, directors, cameramen and lightmen," added the actor who was also seen in "Rascals".

He is next big movie is Madhur Bhandarkar's mega-budget "Heroine", which has Kareena Kapoor in the lead.

Ladies v/s Ricky Behl is an average success

Posted: 17 Dec 2011 01:39 AM PST

Box office reception to 'Ladies v/s Ricky Behl' went entirely as per the script that would have been drafted in the office of Yash Raj Films. The film opened on an average to above average note, stayed reasonably stable as days passed by and would now end up being an earning preposition for all involved. Yet, it is strange how some out there are 'surprised' with its 'relative underperformance' and also the fact that it hasn't turned out to be a 'mighty entertainer'.

Mr. Bhatti on Chutti - Preview

Posted: 16 Dec 2011 11:39 PM PST

Advertisement   This is a story based in 2005-06, the times of military aggression and war in Iraq and Afghanistan. Set in this time is our central character of Mr Bhatti (Anupam Kher) a bank clerk, a lovable yet lonely nerd. Mr Bhatti dares to do what we prefer to discuss with our morning cuppa and forget soon after. He has the passion to implement his peace plan aimed at 'Saving the World'. And he will not stop at anything until he achieves it...

The key to that plan is Mr. George W Bush whom Mr. Bhatti has been trying to contact at the White House from his bank telephone, so that he doesn't have to pay for the ISD calls!

But strange things are happening to the man who wants to save mankind... this delusionary man is being followed and photographed. Wonder who these guys are?

Suddenly, Mr Bhatti realises that he has actually won a FREE trip to Europe, though he has entered no contest. Who has sent him the ticket and the hotel package free of cost? How can Mr. Bhatti go on this trip without telling his favourite star, Mr. Amitabh Bachchan about it? Never mind, if he has only met him in his dreams, thus far...In reality, all Mr. Bhatti can manage is to stand outside Mr. Bachchan's bungalow with a crowd, awaiting a glimpse of his hero

Now to Mr Bhatti's Chutti.

Bhatti arrives at the picturesque lake district in England with a group of tourists. Strange happenings follow Mr. Bhatti even on his chutti. An English beauty, Alice, falls in love with him, never mind his eccentricity. Mr. Bhatti, for the first time in his life, feels the power of being overpowered by a woman's attention... He goes crazy with so much attention being showered on him. He tries hard at all times, but cannot manage to suppress his excitement. Stranger things await him... soon.... Alice vanishes and is presumed dead.... murdered, actually.

Mr. Bhatti, naturally is the prime suspect. When the U.K. police check him out for criminal records on their data, it is revealed to them that he is not Mr. Bhatti but the dreaded terrorist Abu Siddique

Is Abu Sidique masquerading as bufoon Bhatti? Javed Khan (Abid Ali) who plays a Pak -born cop, now with the U.K. police digs deeper. And he realizes that Mr. Bhatti merely has a strange resemblance to the wanted terrorist, Abu Siddique, the mastermind behind the U.K. bombings. Abu Siddique has flown the nest!

The U.K police try to convince Bhatti to pretend to be Abu Siddique. Bhatti refuses. And it takes all of Javed Khan's effort to get his friend Mr. Amitabh Bachchan to come in to play and to convince Mr. Bhatti to agree. From Mumbai, Mr. Bachchan convinces Bhatti to save the world by taking on the persona of Abu Siddique.

How can Bhatti refuse Bachchan? Bhatti infiltrates into the Abu Siddique gang. Which is fine.

But what about Abu's girl freind, Katy? She thinks he is the real Abu and comes on too strongly on to him. And poor Bhatti is a virgin. Through all this Mr. Bachchan keeps advising Mr. Bhatti to do the right thing at the right time

Katy is unmanageable. And on top of it, Javed khan asks Bhatti to find out what is the gang's real plan? But as Bhatti finds out their plan, the real Abu Siddique finds out that there is someone impersonating him in U.K. He leaves Turkey for UK to add to Bhatti's woes.

It is now, that we learn about a plot within a plot. And all hell breaks loose. Now, the dead Alice also surfaces. And Bhatti gets one shock after another.

Bhatti finds himself face to face with death, and utilizes his last wish to call up Mr. Bachchan. Bhatti tells Bachchan, 'marwa diya aapne'...But can one keep Bachchan down? Mr. Bachchan once again, inspires Bhatti so much that his fan can defy death and fight to save humanity

Its action stations after this. And Bhatti whom we all thought was an idiot, a buffoon, now turns the tables and to what effect! We realize that to be single-minded about world peace, even at the cost of one's life, can turn an ordinary man in to a hero.

Now it is to be seen if Bhatti's desire to meet Bush and more importantly Mr.Bachchan is fulfilled or not...

Mr. Bhatti on Chutti is, on the face of it, a comedy. But there is much more to it in the larger sense, Mr. Bhatti on Chutti talks about the common man Mr. Bhatti's dream of a workable peace plan in a world ravaged by war and hunger. The film is also a celebration of Mr. Amitabh Bachchan's stardom. He plays Mr. Bhatti's conscience and also his inspiration as he is in real life to millions of us.

Hrithik in Dhanush's fantasy film?

Posted: 16 Dec 2011 06:48 PM PST

South star Dhanush of 'Kolaveri Di' fame is keen on casting the star in his directorial debut in Bollywood

Post the Kolaveri mania, there couldn't have been a better time for South star and Rajnikanth's son-in-law Dhanush to announce his directorial debut in Bollywood. The actor is planning to take the leap into direction with a fantasy flick.

It is learnt that Dhanush is keen on casting Hrithik Roshan as his main lead. Says a source, "A few days back, Dhanush was in Mumbai and he met some people regarding his project.

He has a few names in mind and Hrithik is on the top of his list. This is a big budget fantasy flick and he needs someone larger-than-life who can carry off the film."

It came as a surprise when Dhanush chose to make this movie in Hindi and not in Tamil. Says Dhanush, "When I say I am directing, I cannot even think of acting in the same space.

It's my dream project and I want to give it my all. So I'd rather just focus on one thing. Though I think it is too premature to talk about the film, I am definitely finalising the story and looking at some big names to cast."

Dhanush will now regularly travel between Chennai and Mumbai for his forthcoming ventures and also this project, which he is expecting to start by 2012 end.

Speaking from Motihari he said, "I get letters from all over the country, and now even from abroad for financial help.

The amount requested ranges from a few thousands to Rs 5 to 6 lakh. There are letters coming from even abroad. This morning, I got a letter from a needy Indian family in Sri Lanka. How do I know how needy they really are?"

Worse, the money-seekers have started walking into Sushil's home.

Nor have I got any intimation or call from the channel as to when the money will reach me. I don't even know how much I'll get after tax deduction, etc. Basically, I am being flooded with requests to share the fund that I don't even have."
