With Love Delhi - Review by Mansha Rastogi

Posted: 18 Dec 2011 05:39 AM PST

With Love, Delhi might work in portions as a guide for tourists having an inclination to visit Delhi. As a film it needs to be remade with a better story again! - Mansha Rastogi    Fri, 16 Dec 2011 Only until a few months ago one would hear of every alternate IIT graduate turning into a writer and publishing his/her novels. But the trend has taken to another level as a bunch of IIT graduates from Delhi release their first feature film With Love, Delhi. Now whether this shows any potential or not remains to be seen.

A high profile real estate developer Khanna (Kiran Kumar) is kidnapped by a historian (Tom Alter) for some old time personal revenge. He initiates a game where the daughter Priyanka (Pariva Pranati) has to solve some odd cryptic clues in order to rescue her father. Enters a prospective lover Ashish who miraculously solves every clue and begins an unending visit to each and every monument of Delhi in a big to find Khanna.

Directed by Nikhil Singh, With Love, Delhi had the germ of what could be an interesting thriller but with sketchy writing and amateurish direction, even the smallest of possibilities of being a mind bending entertainer gets mired. The focal point of seeking revenge is highly disconnected from the unnecessary rounds across Delhi making you scream out, 'why this kolaveri di?'

The filmmaker tries showing his prowess by putting across a non linear narrative as well, maybe to prove a point; however, the story of the film appears so faulty that any type of narrative couldnâ

Jo hum chahein - Review by Mansha Rastogi

Jo Hum Chahein should only remain as a show reel for both the newcomers to showcase their talent. As a film it fails to deliver. - Mansha Rastogi    Fri, 16 Dec 2011 One of the most tried and tested formula of attaining a hit is to have a fresh and young romantic tale. For some it works wonders while some end up biting the dust. A completely new team makes its entry in Hindi film industry taking the safe route of a love story Jo Hum Chahein but with an assurance of being 'different'. Let's find out whether their assurances work with the audience or not.

Rohan Bhatia, a self obsessed, over confident and cocky MBA graduate thinks the world is in his pockets and deals with every challenge in an overtly optimistic fashion. He joins a stock broking firm and there meets Vikram (Alyy Khan) who surprisingly gets impressed by the full of himself hero and introduces him to a top level investor Amrita Singh (Achint Kaur). A cougar Amrita develops the hots for the young boy who otherwise is head over heels on his babe Neha Kapoor (Simran Kaur Mundi). Neha is an upcoming model who believes in eternal love. One drunken night, Rohan ends up sleeping with Amrita and Neha finds out while simultaneously Rohan has also slept with Neha and now she is pregnant! Phew need I say more?

The biggest flaw in the film is the patchy writing and amateurish treatment. A very Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman type story is reworked and presented with new cast in a bid to make yet another Kumar Gaurav starrer Love Story showing no acknowledgement to the changing times and the advancement in audiences' taste.

In a typical fashion the rise of the self-obsessed hero is shown first followed by his fall and self actualization terming it to be a coming of the age love story. If that isn't enough, there's a convenient spin of friends denouncing the hero, the pregnant girlfriend wanting to retain the baby, added dollops of cheesy dialogue and songs.

The only thing commendable about the debutant filmmaker Pawan Gill is that he keeps the production values very high. The cinematography is great and the locations are brilliantly captured giving a very Yash Chopra film feel. Despite having a run of the mill storyline, he manages to extract convincing performances from his debut cast.

Debutant Sunny Gill gets a brilliant launch vehicle from his family of producer Aman Gill and director Pawan Gill. He looks extremely confident for a first time performance and shows great range in acting right from funny to dramatic to emotional. Former Miss India and newcomer Simran Kaur Mundi also complements him well.

Over all, Jo Hum Chahein should only remain as a show reel for both the newcomers to showcase their talent. As a film it fails to deliver.

Pappu Can't Dance Saala - Review by Mansha Rastogi

Pappu doesn't quite work saala! Fails to entertain or leave any impact on the audience. Watch it only if you are big fans of Neha Dhupia and Vinay Pathak's antics. - Mansha Rastogi    Fri, 16 Dec 2011 The motley group of Saurabh Shukla, Vinay Pathak, Rajjat Kapoor and Neha Dhupia has always been the proponent of content based films. Tackling one satire or another in their small budget films, the group slowly created a niche in the industry and also an audience that would eagerly look ahead for their film. This time around too the Motley group comes up with an interesting plot of odd couples. Whether this time around their film works or not let's find out.

Vidyadhar Acharya (Vinay Pathak), a man with values who just moved to Mumbai from Benaras and finds it hard to adjust to the bustling city. He takes an apartment in the sales tax colony where Mehek Malavde (Neha Dhupia) is his neighbour. She is a loud, brash and brazen chorus dancer in Bollywood trying to earn a name and a living. One day the sales tax department raids the colony and Mehak gets evacuated from her apartment. Vidyadhar heaves a sigh of relief after finding the proceedings but his happiness vanishes the moment he reaches home. Mehak occupies Vidyadhar's apartment and they decide to live together after a lot of fighting.

The film could've made for a very interested watch had it been for a better writing as the plot had enormous scope for humorous tittle-tattle between the two opposite characters. However, writer-director Saurabh Shukla fails to seize the opportunity and ends up with a predictable plot that drags beyond tolerance. The story goes around in circles with needless complication thrown in to elongate the plot.

Both Vinay Pathak and Neha Dhupia looks comfortable in their parts and do a decent job but could've given pleasant or rather entertaining performances had the storyline aided their characters. Rajjat Kapoor makes a customary entry in the film and doesn't quite contribute to the plot in any manner. Gets completely wasted. Naseeruddin Shah is forcefully added to the cast and much to the annoyance is horribly wasted with a small inconsequential role.

Over all, Pappu doesn't quite work saala! Fails to entertain or leave any impact on the audience. Watch it only if you are big fans of Neha Dhupia and Vinay Pathak's antics.

Big B wants polio-free nation, happy no polio case in 2011

Posted: 17 Dec 2011 05:39 PM PST

New Delhi, Dec 15 (IANS) Bollywood megastar and UNICEF goodwill ambassador Amitabh Bachchan is happy with the drop in numbers of polio-affected children in India and hopes that the country will get totally free from the disease.

"For one whole year for the first time since I took over the brand Ambassador of Polio UNICEF campaign, we have zero cases in India. Feel proud and delighted that finally our efforts have been successful. Started in 2002, with over 1000 cases and today just one in West Bengal," Amitabh posted on micro-blogging site Twitter.

"This year's Polio Campaign... no case reported from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, which are most vulnerable states. Only one case in West Bengal!" he added.

The actor attended an event in Mumbai Thursday where he launched a new UNICEF campaign for polio, and was feted by the government and UN officials for his work towards polio eradication.

"And UN officials tell me that hopefully by early next year we shall be able to announce that India is finally free of polio... I am so delighted that the polio eradication campaign and my incessant plea of 'do boond zindagi ke', has proved so successful!!

"But let's not sit back, let's keep at it to completely free our country of this dreaded disease... each Indian owes this to the nation," added the 69-year-old, who recently welcomed a grandchild, a baby girl -- the first to be born to his son, Abhishek, and daughter-in-law, Aishwarya.

The veteran star also thanked other celebrities who were involved in the campaign, and gave a word of advice to all parents.

"May I also add here that polio is incurable, but it can be prevented provided the vaccine is taken in time... And yes, on some of the campaign videos I did invite Sachin (Tendulkar), Aishwarya, SRK (Shah Rukh Khan), and Jaya (Bachchan) to promote the cause... so thank you to all!!" he wrote.
