With some of us entering the business world and others applying for jobs, knowing the right way to dress can in some cases stand out more than your resumé. Here are some pointers on the proper attire for any business situation. These tips can also help with class presentations!

  1. First impressions are key: When picking out an outfit, make sure you think about the image you would be giving off to others.
  2. Dress appropriately: Some people don't understand the proper way to dress for presentations or interviews. I can't tell you how many times in high school I saw girls wearing jeans and a t-shirt for a presentation. Something you normally wear everyday around the house or in the hallways won't be appropriate for professional dress
  3. Blouse and dress pants are the way to go: You can rarely go wrong with this basic outfit. A button up white shirt and black pants with a low heel are a great starter. Suits can sometimes be a little too much for some situations, but they are definitely professional.
  4. Accessorize: This is where you can add a personal touch to your outfit. Don't go over a simple necklace and earrings. A bracelet can also be acceptable. The key is to be minimalistic with your accessories.

Professional dress can be tricky to find on the racks of your favorite stores, so you might have to look somewhere you might not normally. It is a good idea to bring your mom along for advice about a hemline or color of a clothing item just to make sure. Just remember, if you have any second guesses about what you are wearing, it's probably not something you should wear.
