Making Fall Trends Work for You

If you find yourself intimidated by the glossy pages of this season's magazines featuring photos of air-brushed models rocking looks that you immediately decide you could "never pull off," then this post is for you. Sadly this is how way too many girls feel about trends. They see them as something for someone else who is "braver" or "more fashionable,” rather than the perfect addition to their wardrobes. While trends can seem intimidating, by learning how to add little bits of a trend (or how to go all the way, while keeping it classy,) you too can make what you love on the runway come to life in your everyday style!

Plaid

Plaid is such a great trend — effortlessly sexy and easily feminine with the right cut. It made its first appearance way back in 1919 and has remained a fashion staple from school girl skirts to cozy flannel shirts. Plaid is so easy to wear and if you're not sure what to pair it with, just try matching something else you're wearing to one color in the pattern. This adds interest, but keeps it streamlined.

Trying the Trend

Wear a plaid dress if you're feeling bold or add little touches of this fun trend with your shoes or scarf. The plaid obsessed might opt for a plaid dress and boots, but I personally love plaid, particularly plaid shirts! In order to avoid looking like a lumber jack, try to find a shirt made of cotton rather than flannel and in a feminine cut.

This casual outfit is comfortable, yet chic and incorporates another trendy piece – the beanie! These cute hates are perfect for fall days (or just bad hair days) and effortlessly adorable.

CHOKERS

Some say the choker originated in France, where woman would wear tight red ribbons around their necks in memory of those who had died at the guillotine. Nowadays, however chokers have far less sinister connotations and are an easy way to play with trends. They can also make your neck look longer and are perfect for those necklines that are a little too high or low for other necklaces.

I love these braided bead chokers (braids are another awesome trend for fall) that are a little more feminine, but the Forever 21 choker with spikes is a great option for those of you looking for something edgier.

While the choker is one trend I have yet to try, I wouldn't mind if this little bow tied cutie magically appeared in my jewelry box. Boots and a slouchy top keep it simple and let the necklace do the talking.

LACE

Lace is one of my favorite trends and it's hanging on for another season! Lace-like geometric patterns have been found from as far back as the time of the Pharaohs and the lace we're familiar with dates back to the 15th and 16th centuries, so while this trend is nothing new, it's definitely stood the test of time.

Lace lovers can opt for the dress, but those of you who are just looking for a little lady-like charm can try the tights, an easy and fairly inexpensive way to add lace to your wardrobe. I just love these lace TOMS! What an easy way to give back and look awesome at the same time! If you want a little more lace in your life try these lace tights paired with your little summer dress and a cardigan to help your wardrobe stretch a farther across seasons

I would wear this lace trend with another one of our fall trends, colored denim. The black lace and the bubble gum pink skinnies are unexpected, yet adorable.

POLKA DOTS

Plaid, stripes and polka dots! Oh my! The fashion world has been in love with patterns all year and this fall is no exception. This playful pattern is a great addition to your wardrobe- totally unexpected and completely on trend!

No need to wear an itsy bitsy teeny weenie bikini though, the polka dot crazed will look totally trendy in a polka dotted top or dress. If you're like me and want to try this fun design in a more subtle way, try wearing polka dotted flats to spice up an otherwise ordinary outfit.

I would wear polka dots by pairing them with yet another trend, menswear. The spotty scarf adds an element of whimsy to the button down and brogues, keeping the outfit from being too serious

Hopefully, this post has inspired you to play with trends a little more than you might already, keeping in mind that as trends come and go, the pieces to invest in and add to your wardrobe are the ones you'll love to wear long after they've left the runway.
