| Coping with Style Demons: Tennis Shoes Posted: 23 Oct 2011 11:14 AM PDT By Megan R of George Brown College. Follow me on Twitter @meggles_07. This article is very painful for me to write. It’s something I hoped would never affect me like I have seen it affect the people around me. It starts out so small too, theres a little bit of pain once and a while, then it gets bad enough you go to the doctors, and after copious x-ray’s and tests they tell you the horrible news: “You’re going to have to start wearing supportive shoes” I could hear a horror soundtrack in the background as my eyes twitched. That was my fate, until otherwise notified, I was to wear “supportive shoes”, everywhere… so I left with a limp and went to the closest pharmacy to purchase insoles for my supportive shoes, “to be extra careful” says my mother. At this point I’m still in disbelief, thinking of all the shoes I’m going to be leaving behind on my daily trek to the downtown core for school. I mean, they want to see the world too! They get lonely by themselves. $10 later and a drive home, I’m stuck looking at my shoes when I walk through the door tearing myself away because it’s just too horrible. I’m a “wear the shoes no matter how much they hurt” kinda girl, especially speaking from my “Shoes Every Girl Should Own“article. Now I know there are people like myself, and our editor Lindsey, who are stuck wearing running shoes for medical reasons, and some who wear them to school or out because they are headed to the gym later (or so they say). For all these people, I’m going to do my best to help you find a way to make your running shoes work for you, while still looking cute. 1. Black is Best. While you are free to choose whatever colour you would like for your shoes, I find that when choosing running shoes, black is the best option, they blend into the rest of an outfit, unlike their brighter counterparts which stand out more, drawing the most attention to your shoes. 2. Try Longer Lengths. When you’re wearing running shoes on a daily basis, try wearing longer pants or skirts that reach just above the shoes. This way your shoes will not distract from the rest of your outfit, thus not impacting your “cute factor”. Plus, because the cold weather is approaching fast (or at least it is where I am), you’ll stay warm while looking cute! 3. Bright Colours!Sticking again with the longer lengths and the black shoes, pair them with a bright coloured top. Not only will it draw all the attention to your face (and away from the shoes), it will make you feel great. Bright colours always help pick me up when I’m having an off-day. 4. Work-out WearPersonally, this is the only time I condone wearing running shoes normally, that and on laundry day. I know there are times when your heading to the gym after class and don’t want to bring an extra pair of shoes, however. So, even if your gym outfit is different than this, you can still look super cute and comfortable during the day in running shoes and your athletic gear. Save your 10-year-old beat up oversized shirts for the gym (or at home..), and release your inner 80’s wild child. Opt for a cropped sweater overtop of a bright tank top. Pair that with a cute pair of fit and flare yoga pants and your gym bag and your set to go! Thoughts? So, what do you think of my ideas on how to look cute while wearing your runners? Are you someone who wears running shoes on a regular basis, or someone (like me) who cringes at the thought?
