Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge : Movie Review Posted: 16 Oct 2011 01:04 AM PDT There are some films that create a huge divide between critical acclaim and mass appeal. Now that's a long and boring topic. Then there are also some films which create between young and old. But what do you say to a production house that caters to both, the young and new? Yes, Yash Raj Films is what we are talking about. The name though may resonate of Switzerland, Chiffon Saris, mushy romance but there is also this edge on the prestigious banner that is catering to new, fresh minds through Y-Films. Though their last John Tucker Must Die's Hindi version Luv Ka The End couldn't make much noise at the box-office despite being good, Y-Films makes its second attempt in targeting the youth with an Uber cool film Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge. It only remains to be seen whether this film finally creates a space in the hearts of young minds or not. Rahul Sareen (Nishant Dahiya) is a Rockstar of college. The entire girl crowd at the University drools over Rahul. Preity Sen (Saba Azad) is one of them. Malvika Kelkar (Tara D'Souza) is a hot upcoming fashion designer who Rahul once dances with while performing on stage. Malvika is hot and intelligent and any guy can fall for her. Vishal Bhatt (Saquib Saleem) is one of them. Vishal pretending to be Rahul adds Malvika and Preity pretending to be Malvika accepts Rahul's request. Now the fake Rahul and fake Malvika get chatty and start liking each other. Vishal and Preity are two people who can't stand each other! Confusing isn't it? Now imagine what happens when the confusion clears out! You got to watch it to be a part of this fun ride! So what if life's not all hunky dory? So what if there are many problems eating up this world? When you are in college, it only takes bunking, studying overnight for exams, partying, sneaking out of house late nights and waiting for that one look from the guy you really like to make your life worthwhile. That's the emotion that Mujhse Fraandship Karoge encapsulates. Y-Films surely is one production house brimming with extra-ordinary new talent and you can only expect this from the new age producer Aditya Chopra to think of the unthinkable. He hands over the reign of Y-Films to producer Ashish Patil who delivers what can be one of the most witty written scripts of 2011 when it comes to youth based films. Not only is the film filled with cleverly written punches one after the other, even the editing is slick and crisp making for an enjoyable watch. The first half is breezy almost taking you back to your college days. The repartees between Vishal and Preity is very funny and witty while their alternate lives of being the fake Rahul and Malvika respectively is intelligently depicted. The second half does get tad clich'd and filmy specially towards the end but you can definitely ignore few little glitches here and there in a joy ride. What aides this film in becoming exceptionally well is the near perfect character-sketch and acting. Its surprising how well does director Nupur Asthana extract the acting from complete freshers like Saquib Saleem, Saba Azad, and even the side characters in the film by the name Hacky and Macho Man. Music is fresh and young going completely with the film. Over all, MFK is Kool! Or shall I go the regular and say this film is a must watch for all the young hearts out there. |
My Friend Pinto : Movie Review Posted: 16 Oct 2011 12:58 AM PDT Son of renowned actors Raj Babbar and late Smita Patil, Prateik Babbar, has a lot pinned on his first solo hero release My Friend Pinto. The film not only has banner UTV Motion Pictures behind it but also has been produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Despite that the film releases alongside four other films and has been feeble in terms of publicity. Despite all odds, whether this film generates crowd turn out at the theater or not remains to be seen. Michael Pinto (Prateik Babbar) has grown up in a small Goan village with simple values. His mother wanted him to become a priest. Just for a week's vacation before becoming a priest, Pinto takes a trip to Mumbai to his friend's (Arjun Mathur) place. Known for being a trouble maker, Pinto gets lost in the bustling city of Mumbai after his friend leaves him at home alone. What happens next follows through a series of sub-plots, maniacal events and bizzarre confusion. Debutante director and protegee of Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Raghav Dar goes the complete theater route in a bid to follow his mentor's maverick ways and ends up with a mish-mashed haphazard plot. The entire script is very broadway material and very losely scripted. The entire plot, right from start till end is faulty and tests your patience beyond tolerance. At a certain event Prateik Babbar event called his character to be as that of Charlie Chaplin. And I can surely say that even the great Charlie Chaplin would squirm in his grave if he gets to know how he remains immortal among us. Raaghav desperately tries to show the demarkation between small town attitude Vs the big city life however falters big time. Not only does he fail in bringing out the main plot properly, even his sub-plots are bizzarre, awry and annoying. The film is too loud and confusing making you wonder why are most of the things happening on screen are happening in such a twisted manner. You do not see such a gullible village dimwit the way Raaghav tries depicting. Moreover, even at that Prateik shows a very limited range of acting. He appears uncomfortable in his character and taut in more cases than one. Even the side actors get totally wasted in this quirky, half baked plot. While Makarand Deshpande and Raj Zutshi hams beyond belief, Divya Dutta is completely over the top. Kalki has barely 5 minutes of screen space apart from a song. Background score by Hitesh Sonik is loud and jarring while editing by Shan Mohammad is blunt and flawed. Music by various artistes is average at best. Over all, My Friend Pinto is a total waste of time and a highly wannabe film. Best avoided. |
Posted: 16 Oct 2011 12:32 AM PDT A big budget film, a huge business tycoon producing it only for the love of his son who debuts as an actor, plot of an action film at hand. Sachiin Joshi starrer Aazaan has a lot going for it. One can't even say that there's been any effort left to promote this film. The Gutka baron not only has excessive TV, Radio and print campaigns going on but also has the nation covered with the hoardings of his film. One cannot forget the huge crowd of media personelle being taken all the way to Dubai in order to promote the film. So does all this money expenditure turn worthwhile for the film? Let's find out. Aazaan revolves around a RAW secret agent AAazaan (Sachiin Joshi), a man of steel of Indian and Afghan origin, who has one of the most important mission at hand; to save India. The country is attacked by a lethal virus that can eradicate the population of the entire nation within couple of hours. The attackers or the terrorist have a huge spread out across the world and are highly organised about their planned crime. AAazaan is sent on a mission to find the cure of the virus. Whether he does or not follows through the rest of the plot. There's a very distinct quality about filmmaker Prashant Chadha. He can turn any plot into an extremely snazzy and stylish film irrespective of the fact that there's any story in it or not. He did so in Himesh Reshammiya's debut film Aap Ka Suroor and by sheer luck and Himesh's crazy fan following the film turned out to be a huge hit. However, one cannot assure the same for Aazaan. Though the film is extremely stylish almost meeting international standards, one cannot ignore the glitches in the plot. There's a main plot of terrorist attacking India and then there are sub-plots of AAazaan's internal demons haunting him and the love angle, all of wish are handled very amateurishly as if the entire focus was in making the film visually appealing. Not only does the past of AAazaan that keeps recurring throughout the film get solved in a jiffy making you feel cheated, even the entire Candice Boucher plot gets reduced to ten minutes. So much for having the playboy star in media campaigns to drive attention. All she gets in one song where she flaunts why she is Candice Boucher and 5 mins of screen time and dialogues. One thing highly commendable about the film is the cinematography and the shooting locations. The Gutka baron has clearly left no stone unturned in ensuring this film to be a visual feast and so it does. Aazaan has been shot in locations still alien to Hindi film industry and each and every location is perfectly captured by laudable cinematography by Alex Fischer. One can clearly see where all the money in this film was put. However, the reason for which all the money is at stake doesn't really quite come up to the expectations. Nearly four times in the film AAazaan's character is referred to as 'Allah ka banda' a man who has the hand of lord Allah on him. A lone man army that he is shown to be, Sachiin Joshi is unrealitically made to fight alone with huge batallions and he also comes out unscathed each time. But when you create a character so large than life, meeting up to its standards gets very difficult. And Sachiin gets mired by this alone. Right from the moment he mouths his first dialogue, you know all you going to witness in this mega-budget venture is one single taut expression. So guess what, you turn out to be right! Sachiin clearly needs serious acting lessons where he can graduate from one expression to many. Music by Salim-Sulaiman is average at best. Background score however is praiseworthy. Editing by Amitabh Shukla and Humphrey Dixion could've been better. Over all, Aazaan is all money no show. Watch it only for the unexplored regions of the world, the brilliance of cinematography and stylish narration. |
Posted: 16 Oct 2011 12:31 AM PDT The highly acclaimed team of Nagesh Kukunoor and Ayesha Takia that last gave Hindi cinema one of the most laudable films Dor makes a come back on celluloid. Not only does the film happen to be Nagesh's next after the damp squib Aashayein but also is Ayesha's comeback film after her marriage to restauranteur Farhan Azmi. Whether this jodi brings back the accolades that Nagesh deserves and also brings back Ayesha in the filmy marquee or not remains to be seen. Set in the picturesque hill station Ganga, Mod revolves around Aranya (Ayesha Takia), whose life is surrounded by whacky people, her father - Ashok Mahadeo (Raghuveer Yadav) who is the head of the local fan club of Kishore Kumar, the fiery Gayatri Garg, "GG" (Tanvi Azmi), her aunt, chubby Gangaram (Nikhil Ratnaparkhi), the local shopkeeper who harbors feelings for Aranya. One day a total stranger, Andy (Rannvijay Singh), lands up at her doorstep to have his watch fixed. He is painfully shy, but keeps returning day after day to have his water logged watch repaired. As payment he leaves a 100 rupee note in the form of an origami swan. Aranya slowly warms up to this quirky stranger and through a series of meetings and against all odds they fall in love. But who is Andy? Where is he from? And what is his past follows through a few "mods" in the story. Filmmaker Nagesh Kukunoor's last attempt of making a big budget film with a big star had completely gone awry. But this time around he goes back to his comfort zone of a small budget film and a simple story of complex minds and once again he manages to please. There seems no rushed attempt in taking the story forward. Each and every shot has its subtely and slow growing fondness around it which is extremely contagious. Nagesh gets the small town setting near perfect and with a soothing serenity wins audience's hearts. The first half of the film goes by very easily with the viewers engulfed in the old world charm as the plot with an interesting twist unfurls. However, it's the second half that works against the hightened expectations from the first half. Nagesh's hold over the film takes a beating in the second half as the film starts dwindling into boredom and hackeyned tripeness. The way Aranya tries to tackle Andy's illness is very amateurish and lightly dealt with. The entire medical aspect of the film is also dealt with a very juvenile manner which eventually makes you mouth "after all it's a Bollywood film". And the climax is completely hackeneyed and so unexpected that it leaves you disappointed. Had it not been for the cinematography by Chirantan Das, Mod wouldn't have had the magic around it. Each and every frame in the film is capture with poetic brilliance. Even the background score Tapas Relia is pleasing. Though the music could've been better and not haphazardly placed in the film. A fairy tale real-life wedding doesn't really appear to have affected Ayesha Takia's acting prowess. The actress is sweet, infectious and completely in command of her character-sketch. What's surprising is Rannvijay Singh's debut. The actor completely wins everyone's heart with his brilliant performance. Owe it to the filmmaker who effectively brings out the best from his actors. Ignoring the weak second half, Mod still can make for a pleasing watch only because of the scenic beauty and brilliant performances. |

A source said, "Shah Rukh clearly told producer Sajid Nadiadwala and director Vishal Bharadwaj that he didn`t want to work on another love story. Shah Rukh suggested that he go into the 'Maqbool'-'Omkara' space with Vishal." Buzz has it that SRK will essay Hamlet in Bharadwaj`s next. "Shah Rukh loved what Vishal did with Ajay Devgn and Saif Ali Khan in 'Omkara.' They plan to shoot the Bollywood adaptation of 'Hamlet' in the remote areas of North India," added the source. |

News : Bebo chooses Aamir over SRK Posted: 15 Oct 2011 09:37 PM PDT Kareena Kapoor had no choice but to miss the international premiere of the biggest release of her career 'Ra.One' as her dates clashes with the shooting of Reema Katgi's 'Dhuaan' starring Aamir Khan. She does not want to miss the premiere but she could not adjust her dates. Said a source, "Kareena has to take some special training for an underwater sequence in the film and she needs time for that too. So going for the premiere is out of the question." The shooting was supposed to be shot in the outskirts of Mumbai but was cancelled at the last minute due to certain technical issues. The location for the shoot has been finalized. Since it's one of the last few scenes to be shot, it cannot be delayed again. Adds the source, "Kareena is the female lead and SRK obviously wants her around as much as possible. She is trying her best to attend the Dubai and London premieres because she does not want to miss the international premieres of her film." However, the shooting of 'Dhuaan' clashes with the grand premiere of 'Ra.One'. "This film is obviously her biggest this year, and she definitely wants to be a part of all promotional events. It's just unfortunate that the premiere is now clashing with the shoot dates of Dhuaan." |
News : Pooja Misrra under heavy attack in Bigg Boss Posted: 15 Oct 2011 09:36 PM PDT Shakti Kapoor might be a villain in movies, but what the Bigg Boss Housemates are doing with Pooja Misrra, is making her seem 'the villain of the House of Scandal'. PM, as Pooja is often referred to, is under tremendous pressure as Bigg Boss hasn't delivered one of her two bags containing her daily essentials, including most of her clothes, pictures of her deity, medicines and beauty utilities. Moreover, her leg has been injured since she entered the House. Above all, she has been facing regular onslaughts from most of the contestants, especially Pooja Bedi, who has been repeatedly branding her "uncooperative" and "arrogant". Bedi feels PM does a lot of "naatak" (drama), has "nakhre" (attitude) and a "mental problem". According to her, Misrra "lacks positive attitude" and has "some imbalance" in her head. So much has Bedi crusaded against PM by now, that even other contestants including Shakti Kapoor, Shonali Nagrani, Vida Samadzai, Mahek Chahal, Sonika Kaliraman Malik, Laxmi Narayan Tripathi (though the last two have made a turnaround off late) and others have become prejudiced, while Misrra finds herself alienated and cornered. "It is natural for Pooja Misrra to throw a fit and get upset in such circumstances," analyses celebrity publicist Dale Bhagwagar, who is a specialist with Bigg Boss and its ways, having handled the publicity for maximum reality show celebrities including Shilpa Shetty, Rakhi Sawant, Kashmera Shah, Sherlyn Chopra and Ashmit Patel. "The pressure of living under one roof with 14 almost unknown people, with uneasy circumstances, unregulated timings, tiresome tasks and deliberately created difficult conditions is tremendous. Even the sanest of persons can shake up in such claustrophobic settings. But then, whether we like it or not, that's what goes into the making of voyeuristic entertainment and higher TRPs and its what this reality show is all about" he adds. Meanwhile, as the first 'eviction' of Bigg Boss approaches its deadline, Pooja Misrra and Charles's Sobhraj's 22-year old wife Nihita Biswas, both, seem to be feeling the jitters. Only time (and votes) will decide who will survive this deviously notorious game. |
Hot : People in Bollywood aren’t stylish: Kangna Ranaut Posted: 15 Oct 2011 09:34 PM PDT Kangna Ranaut recently walked the ramp for designer Shantanu Goenka at the ongoing WIFW. She says, except for Priyanka Chopra and Sonam Kapoor, no one in Bollywood is stylish. Designer Shantanu Goenka showcased his line, inspired by the French queen Marie Barrios. According to the Kolkata-based designer, Kangna was the perfect muse for this collection. "I wanted Kangna to look feminine, I didn't want to go overboard and I thought she completely justified the theme," he said. Dressed in a white and beige gown, she looked confident while sashaying down the ramp. "I never feel uncomfortable while walking the runway as I have done it in films like 'Fashion' and 'Raaz 2′. So it has become a part of my character," Kangna said. "Also, I love Shantanu's design and admire his creativity. He always makes something which suits my complexion and figure," she added. Kangs is now working on the sequel of 'Tanu Weds Manu' and 'Ishqiya'. |
News : John Abraham to romance Vidya Balan Posted: 15 Oct 2011 09:30 PM PDT After the instant hit of 'Force', director Vipul Shah has not only planned to made a sequel to the film but also decided to revive the on-screen romance of John Abraham and Vidya Balan. John and Vidya's chemistry was very much talked about in Nikhil Advani's 'Salaam-E-Ishq' way back in 2007 and now Vipul Shah ardently wants to revive their romance in 'Force 2'. The source said, "Vipul wanted the film to be bigger than 'Force' and so, he has finalised Vidya Balan to play the lead role. He has also decided to retain the original film's director Nishikant Kamath for the sequel. Nishikant already had an idea, which he developed during the making of 'Force.' Since the original film has been the biggest opening of any John Abraham starrer, the filmmakers have decided to title it 'Force 2.'" In 'S-E-I, John and Vidya's on-screen chemistry sparked so bright that it became a big concern for John's ex-flame Bipasha Basu then and she warned John to cut all ties from Vidya. When contacted, Vipul said, "Yes, we are extremely happy with the success of 'Force' at the Box Office. I am keen to start the sequel with John immediately. The story is a completely new adventure, with a new villain, who John will have to go head-to-head with." |

I'd like to some heavy duty performance oriented films.'' Soon Bebo will start with Madhur Bhandarkar's 'Heroine' and added that in the near future she wants to do movies like 'The Devil Wears Prada', 'Bridges of Madison County' and 'Mama Mia'. Kareena Kapoor is an ardent fan of Meryl Streep, she said, "I'm a Meryl Streep fan and I think age or marital status can never be a deterrent for an actor. The only thing that one needs is passion. Like I said, acting is like the air I breathe. Its that essential.'' |
