Ra.One : Movie Review

Posted: 28 Oct 2011 11:05 PM PDT

If there's one thing people have been looking forward to on Diwali more than the festival itself its Shah Rukh Khan's Ra.One. And after months of exhaustive publicity campaign the film finally sees the light of the day. There have been ample speculations and predictions around this film whether it will be good or bad. We give you an insight into what this film is all about.

Shekhar Subramaniam (Shah Rukh Khan) is a techie geek. A dimwit otherwise, Shekhar is more of a shame to his son Prateek (Armaan Verma). In a bid to impress his son, Shekhar creates a game in which the villain is more powerful than the hero as desired by Prateek. Hence originates Ra.One (Tom Wu, Arjun Rampal). Courtesy some confusing analogy about artificial intelligence, Ra.One starts programming its own self and transports from virtual world to real world to kill Lucifer (game name of Prateek) who challenged him in the game. Now that Ra.One is out in real world, how can G.One stay behind? Thus starts the battle between Ra.One and G.One coupled with some emotional drama between G.One, Sonia (Kareena Kapoor) i.e. Shekhar's wife and Prateek.

The initial 40 minutes of the film are a complete drag replete with cheap jokes that make you squirm in your seats. Sample this -
Kalnayak (Sanjay Dutt) has Desi Girl (Priyanka Chopra) kidnapped while Shah Rukh Khan as the superhero Lucifer comes to save Desi Girl. Amidst cheesy spoofs on many a films including a background score of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and also jokes like Bruce Lee's three apparent sisters Iski Lee, Uski Lee and Sabki Lee, Lucifer saves the day. A black fat woman who's the teacher of Prateek happens to be having her sex tape where she is spanking herself that gets leaked in the class.

While being frisked at the airport security, a heavily pierced SRK shows off his pierced nipples. The frisking machine even throws an alert towards SRK's crotch. Now the least I say the better.

Needless to say director Anubhav Sinha surely may have undergone a lot of research work to get the content of this film right. We anyway see glimpses of Matrix, Bicentennial Man, I Robot, and Terminator 2: Judgement Day, Toonpur Ka Superhero among others.

The real deal starts with Ra.One becoming a part of the real world. However, by then your patience is tested quite enough. The entire first half and a major portion of second half doesn't even have a glimpse of Arjun Rampal. The first half has Ra.One played by Tom Wu. So much for keeping Arjun's look under wraps for a very long time during film promotions.

Shah Rukh Khan's enactment of a South Indian dimwit is annoying. Wonder what the idea behind sketching such a character was; make him appear endearing or annoying?

Second half picks up pretty well as it has enough action, stunts and flying cars to keep you glued to the screen. Though the Bicentennial Man type emotional drama between Shah Rukh Khan and Kareena Kapoor is much of a hindrance to the action scenes. The end does become much a cliché but then blame it on the Bollywood style filmmaking. One cannot blame the filmmaker when all that works in the end in Hindi films is happy ending.

Coming to the VFX work, there are some scenes especially about the car flying in the air are brilliantly executed, even the final kombat between G.One and Ra.One is one of the rare effects seen in Hindi Cinema but there's inconsistency even at that. There are some shots which are extremely tacky and easily identifiable. Specially the shoddy graphics work done on Rajinikanth in his cameo scene.

The film structure is more like the kinds we saw in the 90s with songs popping without context. The music is good and has already grown on people courtesy excessive promotion on TV, Radio etc.

Armaan Verma deserves a special mention. The kid is very confident for a first film appearance. A great find. Arjun Rampal keeps gritting his teeth in a bid to act tough and has a very small role. Kareena Kapoor looks very pretty and pulls her part well.

Shah Rukh as a producer excels in marketing his film well. He makes his film bigger than him as well. However, as a film he fails in delivering a flawless film. Even as an actor he is average at best.

Over all, Ra.One is visually appealing but not for the ones looking for sense in this piece of cinema.

Damadamm! : Movie Review

Posted: 28 Oct 2011 11:03 PM PDT

The big pink pout, that low cleavage, the silent moves, the intense expressions... Well if you thought this review was getting prurient enough to describe a woman lustfully then you're wrong. This... ahem... happens to be the description of our notorious nasal music composer cum singer turned actor Himesh Reshammiya for his film Damadamm!

Sameer (Himesh Reshammiya) has everything going great for him in life except his over-possessive and nagging girlfriend Shikha (Purbi Joshi). To add to it, now he has a great friendship with his boss's sister Sanjana (Sonal Sehgal). How he manages to keep his friendship from the radar of his possessive girlfriend and whether he manages to sail in both boats is what follows through the rest of the plot.

Expect only Himesh to make daring decisions, he clashed his Radio with 2009's highly awaited film Paa and despite the dwindling career, the multi-talented person is pitting his highly publicized latest flick Damadamm once again with the most anticipated film of this year Ra.One!

If there's one thing that remains extremely consistent throughout Himesh's acting career it's his tautness. It's highly commendable to see how meticulously he has nurtured and nourished his expressionless-ness and he takes his legacy forward even in Damadamm.

It is also very commendable on the filmmaker Swapna Waghmare's part to risk her shots by giving no dialogues to Himesh and make his silence do the talking. In a script when even the dialogues aren't helping sort the confusion of the audience, the filmmaker relies on Himesh's most consistent part to take the story forward!

There's an entire sequence in the film where Sonal Sehgal, while sitting in the car, keeps quizzing Himesh and all she gets in revert are his pouts, smiles and blank face. Wonder why he gets reduced to the silent hero.

Earlier titled Ishq Unplugged, Damadamm has been in the pipelines for at least 3 years and one can without doubts say that had it released before the girl bashing film Pyar Ka Punchnama it would've definitely worked with the masses. Courtesy enough witty takes on relationships in the past, the effect of Damadamm reduces manifold. Though the take on relationships in this film is quite amusing and hilarious so much so that Purbi Joshi almost ends up epitomizing the entire female clan, there isn't anything novel in this story as well.

The first half is breezy and moves with quick pace. It even has a good screenplay to keep you glued to the screen. Purbi Joshi's character is entertaining and makes you associate or relate with the plot somewhere or the other. However, the film stretches like elastic in the second half almost making you squirm in your seats.

Both the actresses Purbi Joshi and Sonal Sehgal do a great job. If only Himesh could complement their acting efforts to make the film partially appealing. Himesh with his long locks, long cleavage and taut look mires the film. We once again advice him crash acting course.

The music is average at best with two songs almost Umrao Jaan and Madhushala becoming hits.

Over all, Damadamm clearly has no Dum! Be wise before opting for this film!

Tell Me O Kkhuda : Movie Review

Posted: 28 Oct 2011 10:55 PM PDT

Recipe of a Bollywood potboiler -

- Take any Hollywood film or a South Indian film or even an old Bollywood film.

- Over cook it on a fire of controversies, rumours and news right from the time it goes on floors.

- Either burn it a little here and there by unnecessary twists and turns or leave it half baked by unjustified storyline.

- Add a dash of contemporary masala like romantic plot, mother-son or father-daughter rona-dhona and melodrama.

- A spoonful of lost and found drama for example re-uniting couple/bothers or parent and child.

- A tadka of hot and sexy promotional song.

Voila! Your film is ready! Hema Malini's Tell Me O Kkhudah seems to have followed this prescription to the T!

One definitely goes great lengths when it comes to assuring a secure future his/her offspring even if it means putting your life/repute or career on line. The original dream girl of Hindi film industry Hema Malini is surely among those people. The legendary actress achieved all due accolades in her career span, earned the tag of a good wife and a great mother too. But one thing she couldn't achieve was to establish her elder daughter Esha Deol's career. Many a veteran film personalities have provided a perfect launch pad for their sons or daughters but jumping late in the bandwagon is Hema Malini who finally re-launches her down and out daughter Esha with Tell Me O Kkhudah.

A rip off of her directorial debut Dil Aashna Hai, Hema Malini's Tell Me O Kkhudah is the story of Tanya (Esha Deol) a popular novelist who keep knocking on various doors in search for her real father.

Plausible Father # 1 - Raja of Pratap garh Abhay Pratap Singh (Vinod Khanna). She goes to Rajasthan (Pratap Garh) only to realize that he doesn't accept her as his daughter as he was told the day his wife died she delivered a dead boy. In a small town when male child is preferred over female, Tanya Sets out to win her plausible father's heart and change his mind set

Plausible Father # 2 - Altaf Zardardi from Turkey (Rishi Kapoor). Tanya goes all the way to Turkey only to find a retard mother who thinks her daughter is still alive despite being dead almost 25 years ago and a father who refuses to accept her in the start. Eventually she sets out to sort the situation once again only to win them over.

Plausible Father # 3 - Tony Costello from Goa (Dharmendra) - Tanya once again sets out to Goa only to be caught between the dons of Goa one among them who happens to be her father. He too denies accepting her from the start but refusing to believe her father could be a goon she doesn't really tries so hard. But as they say fate had a different story for her in the cards.

Now one amongst them is her father and if you really want to know who it is, you must dare to watch the film.

Directed partly by Hema Malini and partly by Mayur Puri, TMOK not only happens to be a remake of Hema Malini's directorial debut Dil Aashna Hai but also has it's 'inspiration' lying in Hollywood Hit Mamma Mia. But this is one of the most shoddy works in ripping films off.

Right from the start there's a customary prelude just for formality sakes in order to jump to the main focus of the story that's of finding a father. If Tanvya was adopted and her foster parents, played by Faroukh Shaikh and Deepti Naval, wanted to hide that fact why would they leave it carelessly in the basement for anyone to go and find it?

There are some glaring errors in the film that just can't pass from a keen observer. For example, a morning scene set at the dining table for breakfast and the time in Faroukh Shaikh's watch says 2pm! Esha Deol gets out of the car with the headlights on and the moment she is out the headlights switch off on their own. Plus there are a lot of other continuity glitches which make for a bad production and direction. Guess nobody bothered to get to the details.

The climax of the film is as funny as it could get and instead of you feeling for the characters you end up crackling up at their inanity. Say a lean and haggard Dharmendra jumps in the sea to save a drowning Esha Deol and instead of bringing her out from the water there's a long underwater scene of both hugging each other!

Both Faroukh and Deepti's character have no depth. Arjan Bajwa's character is very sketchy and senseless. Chandan Roy Sanyal is royally wasted and so are other main actors such as Vinod Khanna, Rishi Kapoor, Madhu etc. Dharmendra's portion in the film is ludicrous. His appearance is tawdry and he looks haggard throughout. Hema Malini's guest appearance only adds to the agony.
Music is best ignored while it's better to not even consider other technicalities like Editing and Cinematography.

Over all, Tell Me O Kkhuda may just be the flower in the grave of Esha Deol's career. Best Avoided.

From the very beginning, the makers of 'Krrish' sequel are facing problem in finding perfect second lead. First they approached Chitrangadha Singh and then Jacqueline Fernandez but both the actress opted out of the role due to their personal choice. For Chitrangadha Singh the role was not sufficient for her. It was a cameo and she had a little scope while Jacqueline walked out of the movie as she was not willing to lip-lock Hrithik Roshan. Nargis Fakhri of 'Rockstar' has been approached for the role.

A source said, "Nargis really loved the script. The modalities are being worked out. It looks like Rakesh Roshan has finally found his heroine. This is a bold role. And Nargis does not have any qualms about wearing a bikini or being intimate with Hrithik on-screen. Her physicality suits the character perfectly. This is exactly what Fernandez was supposed to do."

If by any chance Nargis refuses the role then Bipasha will be signed.

"Shooting begins next month and so, if Nargis is not finalised for the role, Rakesh has decided to offer it to Bipasha Basu," added the source.
