How to Wear a Maxi Skirt in the Winter

The Maxi skirt is one hot trend that just won't go away. I happen to like this trend for its bohemian meets feminine feel and surprising versatility. If you jumped on the band wagon this summer or fall, you certainly don't want to let it languish in the closet all winter. Combining pieces across seasons is a fantastic way to get the most out of your clothes and create even more possible outfit combinations!

Here are some tips for wearing a maxi skirt even in the winter:

Make sure it’s seasonally appropriate. Heavier maxi skirts in deep tones will look fabulous and winter chic. Anything gauzy or in a floral print should probably be retired for the season. Sorry, gals. Sheer fabrics are trendy for winter, however,  so consider those an exception.

With Tights. No matter how cute your outfit is, if it's not keeping you warm, it's not doing its job, Tights are a wonderful way to keep your legs toasty warm even without falling into the “pants rut” so many of us find ourselves in after a few chilly months.

With Boots. I happen to think boots and maxi skirts are adorable together and will go a long way towards keeping you warm.

Check your hemline. In the summer and fall, it's kind of cute to have a maxi so long it's sweeping the ground. You'll want to skip this in the winter though because soggy, snow-covered clothing is never cute or fun to wear.

- Sweaters are great with maxi skirts. Chunky knitted sweaters are a classic pairing for maxi skirts and help balance out the outfit.

Outfit #1: Prim and Proper

Classy Maxi
This outfit definitely has a vintage feel. My favorite part is the brown ankle booties with the olive green of skirt! The boots and the coat would look wonderful with almost any maxi skirt. For chillier days or nights, wool tights would be a nice addition. Even if you’re not quite sold on the entire outfit, you can definitely incorporate items you might already have in your closet to create this kind of old-fashioned girl look.

Outfit #2: Gothic-inspired

Geometric Maxi Skirt
The geometric pattern in this skirt is the focal point of the outfit. I’ve kept the rest of the pieces very simple, all black and silver tones. You could wear a gray or even teal sweater with this skirt to add more interest. Again, boots are an awesome match for maxi skirts and they make them look classy instead of just cute.

Oufit #3: Add a Trench

Last but not least, this skirt is probably the boldest color choice. Maxi skirts can be challenging to wear for some of us simply because of how large and overwhelming they can look in a black or brown, much less purple. If you do love the maxi skirt trend and aren’t intimidated by the sheer volume a maxi skirt affords, this skirt could be a great option for you! Bangles and boots dress it up a little, but the sweater is fairly simple. I added a trench coat because this style of coat, in addition to being a classic every girl should own, looks outstanding with a maxi.
