| Dorm Decorating: Bedroom Posted: 05 Jul 2011 05:20 AM PDT Follow my blog with Bloglovin By: Lindsey, CS editor. Follow me @collegestyle12. As promised, I’m breaking down the most important spaces in your dorm and apartment. I’m starting with the bedroom, because to me, it’s the most important. You’ll be sleeping here, studying here and sometimes doing both at the same time, especially during finals week. For Your Dorm: Items I bought from Deck My Dorm and Target. You’ll need: - Mattress Pad: This is very important. Get one and make it a comfy one. If your bed is Twin XL, which it most likely is, make sure all your bed accessories are also Twin XL. I like the foam eggshell ones. Buy early, because these always sell out in Twin XL when the school year gets closer.
- Mattress Cover: Some mattresses already have one. The cover will help keep you even farther away from that dorm-issue mattress. Especially necessary if you question the cleanliness of your mattress.
- Sheets: For everything on your bed, comfort is key. If you are only going to get a few hours of sleep a night because of homework, better make them count! Jersey sheets are super comfy. You need two sheet sets and four pillow cases. You need to change your pillow case AT LEAST every week. Keeping it on any longer is bad for your skin and can make you break out.
Items: sheets, body pillow, tree pillow, velvet pillow - Pillows: You need four different kinds of pillows: pillows to sleep on, shams to use when studying in bed, throw pillows for decoration and a body pillow for easily turning your bed into a sofa if you have company. Don’t forget to grab the pillows off your bed at home before heading off to college. My friend forgot his and had to sleep without for three weeks until his parents brought him pillows!
- Blankets: You probably need three blankets for your dorm room: one for warmer weather, a duvet or comforter for colder weather and a throw for snuggling up with or for studying outside. The duvet/comforter is going to be a focal point in your room, so make sure it’s something you love. I recommend getting one that is reversible because you’ll get bored of it. Mine was designed by the lovely ladies at Deck My Dorm. The front side is colorful “Circle of Life” trees and the back side has a pattern with smilies, no gun signs and various other “hippie symbols” as my boyfriend liked to point out.
- Bed Caddy: If your bed is lofted, you need a bed caddy to hold your cell phone, magazines, homework and whatever else you may need throughout the night. Hearing your cell phone going off from five feet below your bed is the biggest downer. Most bed caddies, although the packaging claims they will stay put because of the weight of your mattress, will NOT stay put, so you’ll need to get a little creative. I punched holes in mine and then tied a ribbon through the holes and through the wire netting on the underside of the bed.
Items: bedding, pom pom throw, zebra blanket, bed caddy - Clapper: This is perhaps the most useful Christmas present I have ever received. My father doesn’t usually pick out gifts, but for last Christmas, he bought my brother and me a clapper (yes, they do really exist). Little did I know this was actually the perfect college accessory. I hooked it up to a lamp so I could “clap on” from my bed when I wanted to get down. During the Christmas season — which went until March in my dorm — I strung colorful lights across my ceiling using 3M hooks and of course, they were connected to the clapper. Can’t stress this enough: buy one. It will impress your friends.
- Artwork: You won’t want to stare at bare walls all the time from your bed! You’ll need some artwork or pictures around your bed on your wall. I used Japanese masking tape to put pictures on the wall behind my bed. Word of caution here: be careful with what artwork you choose for this specific area. Paintings look really cool when its light, however, when you wake up in the middle of the night super disoriented, you might be freaked out by this chick staring at you, like I was.
- Air Mattress: Depending on how comfortable your futon is and how many guests you plan on having during the school year, you may want to purchase an air mattress for your sleepover guests. Also, bring a sleeping bag. You can use it for stargazing or if you have to go to some sort of retreat throughout the year.
Items: the clapper, wall decal, kissing poster, beetle poster, Papaya wall art Thoughts? What do you think of my bedroom checklist? Did I leave anything out? As always, email us at info@college-style.com or tweet us @collegestyle12 with any decorating questions. |
