Editor’s note: This is the sixth post in a series about decorating your dorm room in specific spaces. Read the introduction here, the bedroom post here, the office post here, the living room post here, the closet post here, and be on the lookout a post about the kitchen.

Whether you actually have a bathroom in your dorm room (lucky you) or if your bathroom is down the hall, you still need a bathroom area to house all your essential items. For my dorm room, the shoe organizer hanging from the end of the bed acted as the bathroom. I used the slots to hold lotion, my hair dryer, hair brushes, hairspray, etc. It worked well for me.

What You’ll Need:

  • Towels: bring at least four towels and two washcloths. Match to your color scheme for extra points.
  • Shower caddy: You’ll need something to store your shampoo, conditioner and other shower stuff to bring to the bathroom if you have one down the hall. Make sure it has holes in the bottom so the water won’t stay in the bottom and get all moldy (gross).
  • Lint roller: Clean off your clothes quickly after snuggling up with your fleece throw. Also can be used to clean off the futon, chair or trunk in your room.
  • Make-up: Downsize your make-up collection if possible. Go through your make-up like you went through your clothes. Throw away anything that is expired and leave at home any make-up you haven’t used in months such as eyeshadow that you no longer like.

  • Makeup mirror: Often the bathrooms are badly lit so you can keep a lighted make-up mirror in your room and put on make-up at your desk.
  • Makeup storage: In my experience, it’s best to have two different make-up storage system. Have a smaller pouch with make-up you wear everyday like mascara or blush or concealer. Store this pouch in your shower caddy. For make-up you only break out for parties, going to dinner with the girls or date night with your man, buy another, bigger organization system that you can keep out of the way when you aren’t using it.
  • Shoe organizer: As I said, I used a shoe organizer hanging from my lofted bed and it worked well. I pushed it to the side so I still had room to climb in and out of the bed. I used this, my shower caddy and my make-up kit to store everything bathroom-related in my room.
  • Heat: Flat iron, curling iron, hair dryer or whatever else. Can be stored in your shoe organizer for dorm use.

  • Toilettes: Bring a comb, a brush, lotion, shower gel, shampoo, conditioner, a razor, shaving cream, a toothbrush, toothpaste, a storage cap for your toothbrush (don’t want it to get dirty), floss, deodorant, mouthwash, Q-tips, tweezers, a manicure kit, nail polish, nail polish remover and anything else you need to get ready. Decide what needs to go in your shower caddy and what can go in the “bathroom” in your dorm room, a.k.a shoe organizer.
  • Med kit: Store a medicine kit in your room for when you are feeling sick or down. You need aspirin, sunscreen, bandaids, cold medicine, Midol, oreos and extras of all your prescriptions.
  • Hand sanitizer: Keep in your room for when you want to wash your hands, but are too lazy to walk all the way to the bathroom. Use often when your roommate is sick to protect yourself.
  • Tissues: Bring Kleenex for when you are sick. Also, if you have your own bathroom, bring toilet paper. You may also want to bring a roll of toilet paper even if you have a bathroom down the hall just to be on the safe side. At UGA, we had a snow storm and went without toilet paper in the dorm bathroom for 3 days! Good thing my roommate and I had stock of TP!
